More Than Meets the Eye About Death, Dying, and Afterlife: Loving ...

Death is a natural occurrence, a passageway. When we can accept human death as another cycle of life, we can enjoy our daily lives more because we won't be in fear. Then we can also gracefully release others who are dying.
I often hear people say that they lost their mother, father, or another person in their lives. I can feel their pain when they express the transition in that way. I have compassion for their feelings. To assist them to feel better, I suggest that they just state what happened. For example, "My mother passed away last month." I also encourage them to close their eyes and speak to them. They are often pleased and comforted when they receive an intuitive response.
People who have had near-death experiences report seeing a tunnel and then a white light. There is always an angel or other being from the light waiting to take them back to the light. They feel nothing but unconditional love and their spirit (not their human bodies which is the only thing that dies) soars back home to the light. After a time of healing, they may become spirit guides or angels for those who are living.
Even though it may not look like that, all individuals have free will to choose when to leave the planet. No matter how they decide to pass on, it is helpful to accept their choice. The following suggestions can assist you to deal with death and dying in a loving way. Put a check next to what you want to say or do.
A. To help those who are dying, I can tell them in a loving way that:
1. They are complete here and it is time to go home.
2. They are worthy to return to the light.
3. It is helpful to forgive others and themselves for all that they felt was wrong, so that they can finish their unfinished business and go in peace.
4. There is nothing to be afraid of because they will be accompanied by an angelic being.
5. They can relax and just let themselves fall into a deep sleep and transcend back into the light.
6. They will be able to communicate telepathically with those they love.
7. If they choose, they can be reborn and live another life cycle on earth.
B. To help me deal with a loved ones death, I am:
1. Forgiving them and myself for anything that I felt was wrong.
2. Knowing that they will be totally taken care of.
3. Accepting that I am whole and complete by myself.
4. Understanding that I am not responsible for their passing.
C. To help me cope after a loved one transitions, I am:
1. Allowing myself to feel all my emotions and expressing them in healthy ways.
2. Realizing that I am likely to have feelings of denial, anger, fear, and sadness.
3. Giving myself time to grieve which is a necessary and important part of my healing process.
4a. Asking myself, "What do I think that I still need from ___ (deceased name) that I can't give to myself?" (Examples: security, love, appreciation)
4b.Giving what I need to myself and/or allowing others to be there for me.
5. Thinking of my loved one as being happy and doing well.
6. Speaking to my loved one out loud or in my mind anytime I have something to say.
7. Reading a book about near-death experiences.
8. Attending a death and dying support group.
9. Reaching out to people I feel close to for support.
10. Seeking a professional counselor to help me cope with my loss.

Selecting Teaching Resources for Homeschooling ? Life As Mom
In my younger, pre-kid days, my idea of summer fun was lying in the sun with a good book, taking breaks only to dip in the pool or grab a bite to eat.?My lounge lizard days have been put on hold as I chase after my littles, keep track of my bigger kids, and attempt to keep the house ship-shape. We do go to the pool almost every day, but I do anything but sunbathe.
One of my favorite pastimes of summer, however, is to plan for the next school year. I am a school teacher at heart though I have ditched the brightly colored, embroidered cardigan sweaters.
Yet I am the ultimate curriculum geek. I love books. I love browsing catalogs. I love Back to School sales!
I get so excited about all the things that we could learn in the coming year!
Yet, having made plenty of unwise book buying decisions over the years, I recommend caution before you go buy a load of books. Think carefully about the topics you want to cover and what experiences you want your children to have in the coming school year.
Ask yourself these questions:
What fits your philosophy of education?
Once you determine your ideals and goals for your child?s education, you will know better the path to take. Spend some time reading up on the principles of education that you?re going to build on. Chances are in your reading you will find references to great book choices.
What fits your season of life?
Some math books are more parent-intensive than others. Some reading programs demand more than perhaps your family?s lifestyle will allow. Know that about yourself and choose wisely.
What do friends recommend?
There?s no reason you need to reinvent the wheel. Go to people that you respect and find out what books have been helpful to them. Read book reviews and do some research about the books and resources that interest you. Browse the Curriculum Fair at Simple Homeschool and check out The Happy Housewife?s round up of curriculum reviews.
What can you afford?
Homeschooling is not free. Not only will it sap your time, energy, and brain cells, but eventually it will tap into your cash. You don?t have to spend thousands of dollars to educate your children well, but you will need to think (and budget) carefully for school expenses.
Our school costs have fluctuated over the years depending on how many children were actively schooling, what cash I had to spend, and what new curriculum we needed to buy. Since I have made it a point to buy stuff that is reusable, I am not having to re-buy everything for each kid that comes along. I recently added it all up; we?ve spent $6,500 over the last nine years of homeschooling, with up to four students actively studying.
What fits your kid?
Not all learning resources fit every kid. I?ve exchanged different books throughout the years, as I?ve now folded four children into our homeschool. It?s imperative to find out how your kid learns, how you best teach, and what works for you all. Be sure to read Joy?s?How to Choose the Right Homeschool Curriculum for Your Family for more ideas.
Rejoice in your custom-made education.
Remember that nothing?s perfect.?Try as you might, you probably will not find the perfect math program or your dream history book. Don?t feel bad if you take the best from several programs and put them together for a custom-made education. I think that?s one of the beauties of homeschooling. You get to give your kid the best that you can find.

FastPreview Adds Context Menu Thumbnails, Full-Res Previews to Images in Windows Explorer [Download Of The Day]

Windows only: FastPreview adds a big thumbnail to every image's context menu in Windows Explorer, while also giving you quick access to a full-res preview as well as loads of data about the file.
Windows Explorer's preview pane and image thumbnails are nice, but if you need a larger preview of an image you usually need to double-click on it and open it up in a program. Unfortunately, if you ever work with images, you've probably already changed the double-click behavior to open in something slow and useful, like the GIMP, instead of Microsoft's faster Image Viewer.
Instead of going through the "Open With" menu every time you just want to preview an image, FastPreview adds an image preview to the context menu. From there, you can see the size of the image and a larger thumbnail (which is customizable in size), and clicking on it will open up a super fast, full-size preview of the image. It also adds an option to the context menu that offers a ton of information about the photo, including EXIF data and other tags. If you work with images at all, it's a great little addition to the context menu.

Papers accused of Yeates contempt

Our correspondent said the law of contempt has become the subject of much debate in recent months.
He said both the competition of 24-hour news and a relatively unregulated internet pose a significant challenge to the system of fair trials, which relies on juries reaching a verdict based only on the evidence they hear in court.

Are the days of visual schedules and choice boards made with Velcro and cardboard behind us? I?ll miss them if they are, though admittedly they can be labour intensive and not particularly robust!
Children these days adapt to technology very quickly and find it highly motivating. Parents and Teachers can take advantage of this. New special education apps for iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad seem to be released every week ? Teachers and Therapists blogs are buzzing with ideas and possibilities.
I am the first to admit I haven?t had much experience with these new technologies but I think they are incredibly exciting for parents and educators of children with special needs. Does Coffee Perk Up Your Brain . . . or Not? | Psychology Today
Coffee may be the most popular drug in America; some 85 percent of Americans confess to drinking coffee daily. We love our coffee because its high caffeine content serves as a relatively fast-acting stimulant. So what if it temporarily increases your heart rate and blood pressure? It wakes us up, helps us focus, and boosts the production of serotonin receptors in our brains, which contributes to the feelings of mood enhancement from a good cup of coffee. Sure, too much can leave you jittery and nervous, and too much can prematurely age your brain because it dehydrates and reduces blood flow, but it tastes sooooo good, creating a debate that goes on and on: How much coffee is too much coffee?
Are You Hearing Things?
According to a small study recently published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, Australian researchers recently found that drinking five regular cups of caffeinated coffee may raise the risk of auditory hallucinations. LaTrobe University researchers asked ninety-two people with varying levels of caffeine intake-and stress-to listen to three minutes of white noise via headphones. The researchers told the study participants that Bing Crosby's rendition of "White Christmas" would be played in the headphones and instructed them to push a buzzer when they were able to hear the song.
Well, the researchers never actually played the song, but study participants pushed that buzzer anyway. Those who drank five or more cups of coffee buzzed three times on average, while the participants who drank less coffee buzzed just once. Another study published in 2009, in the same journal, showed that people who consumed the equivalent of three brewed cups of coffee were three times more likely to hear or see things that weren't there.
These studies theorized that caffeine (in coffee, and other foods, drinks, and drugs) may worsen the effects of stress on the body by increasing the amount of cortisol your body releases when under duress. So if you go for that third cup of coffee each morning, are you likely to see or hear visions? If you took these studies at face value, perhaps you'd have reason to be a tad worried. We, personally, would like to see additional, more nuanced studies before we accept that a mere five cups of coffee a day can produce hallucinations for people who are under exceptional stress, or anyone else.
However, if you love coffee-and we do-you probably justify excessive consumption by saying, and perhaps believing, that it fires up your brain, making you more productive and, well, smarter. You think coffee is the perfect pick-me-up drug . . . but is it?
Not Quite the Wake-Up Drug You Think It Is
Downing those cups of coffee in the morning may fire up your neurons, but studies show that caffeine only increases the output and quality of your work if the work you're doing doesn't require nuanced or abstract thinking. Caffeine seems to speed your thinking processes up a bit, and improve memory creation and retention when it comes to declarative memory, the kind you use when memorizing lists. It doesn't seem to help at all when it comes to creative energy, or to thinking beyond basic tasks. Thanks to the increasing tolerance that comes with regular consumption, it eventually takes more and more caffeine to get the same effect.
It's also true that consuming too much caffeine can irritate your stomach, cause headaches, create anxiety, serve as a diuretic, and disturb your sleep. And it's important to note that caffeine is not only found in coffee beans but also in tealeaves, cocoa beans, and in products derived from these sources. Further, you may not be aware that caffeine is also found in more than a thousand different over-the-counter and prescription drugs and vitamin supplements and that there is a very small amount of caffeine in decaffeinated coffee.
So How Much Is Too Much?
As long as you still drink plenty of healthy beverages, such as water, fruit juice, milk, or green tea, you can have a few cups of coffee and feel perfectly good about it. Most coffee mugs, however, actually contain two to two and half cups, and the fancy sizes at your favorite coffee places can hold a lot more coffee (and caffeine) than you think. The pharmacological active dose of caffeine is defined as 200 milligrams, and the daily-recommended not-to-exceed intake level is the equivalent of one to three cups of coffee per day (139 to 417 milligrams). Doctors say 600 mg a day of caffeine can cause anxiety, difficulty breathing, and an irregular heartbeat.
Below is a guideline for approximate amounts of caffeine in commonly used foods and beverages:

The Cold Hard Facts
Caffeine is not stored in the body, so its effects are not permanent. Its impact can start to be felt ten to fifteen minutes after ingestion, and the effect lasts two to three hours. People who regularly consume more than 300 milligrams a day may suffer withdrawal symptoms if they abruptly stop. These symptoms include fatigue, depression, irritability, jitters, and headaches as blood vessels in the brain dilate. To ease symptoms, cut back on other caffeine sources, such as tea or soda, and drink coffee that is half caffeinated and half decaffeinated. If you pare back slowly over the course of a few weeks, your transition will go more smoothly-and your headaches will disappear in a week or two; after which, you can elect to consume an amount of caffiene that provides the goodies you love but doesn't lead to negative effects.
Can You Overdose?
A man in England actually died from a caffeine overdose. He had purchased caffeine powder over the Internet, and didn't heed the instructions to never take more than 1/16th of teaspoon. According to reports, he swallowed one or two teaspoons of the highly concentrated powder. You're not likely to make the same mistake, but it is important to know that there is such a thing as caffeine overdose.
Mixing alcohol and caffeine is a very bad idea. In November, 2010, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a strong warning that caffeinated alcoholic beverages posed a "significant risk" to consumer health and that inexperienced drinkers "may not realize how much alcohol they have consumed because caffeine can mask the sense of intoxication."
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) consulted experts in toxicology, neuropharmacology, emergency medicine, and epidemiology to contest beverage manufacturer claims that the addition of caffeine to alcoholic beverages was "generally recognized as safe." They also deemed that the beverages "posed a public health concern." Most of those beverages have removed the caffeine, but it's wise to read labels carefully and steer clear of alcoholic beverages that include caffeine.
Does Drinking Coffee Sober You Up?
In movies we often see characters drinking coffee after a binge, but research has found the caffeine in coffee (or in alcoholic drinks) doesn't have a sobering effect. In fact, it seems only to make drunk people think they're sobering up. Studies have found that people who drink caffeine along with alcohol think they're sober enough to drive, but the truth is that their reaction time and judgment remain impaired. College kids who drink both alcohol and caffeine were found more likely to have car accidents. [Some studies point to exercise as the quickest way to sober up when drunk.]
