Love-triangle books a headache for France's Hollande

PARIS (Reuters) - Stuck with dismal approval ratings for his presidential debut, France's Francois Hollande is now having his private life raked over in a series of books that dissect the alleged jealousy between his current and former companions.

Despite Hollande's insistence he wants his home life kept private, public interest has been rife since first lady Valerie Trierweiler sent a "killer tweet" in June that exposed the animosity between her and Segolene Royal, the president's partner up to mid-2007.

A book out this week describes how Hollande's flirtation with Trierweiler goes all the way back to the early 1990s and that in 2003 Royal warned the journalist, 11 years her junior, to stay away from her man, then head of the Socialist Party.

Two other new books pore over the long-running rivalry between Trierweiler and Royal, whom Hollande allegedly wavered about leaving but finally quit to set up home with Trierweiler following Royal's unsuccessful presidential bid in 2007.

None of the books contains scandalous revelations, but the constant raking-over of the messy love triangle does not help Hollande's image as he battles criticism that his soft-touch leadership style is proving ineffective.

Even left-wing media have accused Hollande of dilly-dallying in his first three months in office. Some commentators see the new books as reinforcing negative opinions of him.

"What we ask of men of power, and thus of presidents, is to show self-control beyond the average," psychologist Serge Hefez wrote in an editorial in weekly Le Nouvel Observateur about "L'Ex" ("The Ex"), a book by one of the magazine's editors.

"Torn in two, he struggles to master the twists and turns in his personal life and could thus, if faced with new dilemmas, show limits in his capacity to govern," Hefez said.

BE VERY CAREFUL

Hollande has returned from the summer break to a chorus of criticism and the steepest slide in popularity of any recent president, due in large part to a fresh surge in unemployment.

He is so concerned about a plunge in his ratings to as low as 44 percent and a perception that he is slow-acting that he this week ordered his ministers to sharpen their communication skills.

Magazines are reveling, however, in the juicy new books, which depict Trierweiler as obsessively jealous and Hollande as indecisive as he struggled with his early attraction to the reporter assigned to cover his party for Paris Match magazine.

"Whenever she appeared you would see Francois Hollande's gaze go dreamy," L'Ex quotes a political journalist who was often present in their company as saying.

The book says that in early 2003 Royal summoned Trierweiler and said: "You can guess why I've called you in. You are aware of the rumors," adding: "I have four children. Be very careful."

The romance between Hollande and Trierweiler allegedly began in earnest in 2005, and L'Ex says that Royal battled to have Trierweiler removed from her post to limit their contact.

The break-up of the Hollande-Royal couple was played out in the public eye, but interest in the drama has intensified since the night of Hollande's election when eagle-eyed TV viewers noted Trierweiler's glare as he kissed Royal on the cheek.

Her now infamous tweet, stating her support for a rival to Royal in a local election race, is still regarded as the biggest public relations gaffe of Hollande's three months in office.

People close to Trierweiler say she was sternly rebuked by Hollande, and she has kept a low profile ever since.

Government sources say Hollande is unruffled by the new books. "Hollande is unflappable. This business about the tweet is old history," one source told Reuters.

But the authors of a second tome, titled "Entre Deux Feux" ("Between Two Fires"), say Trierweiler's tweet has made their relationship fair game for examination.

Political commentator Pierre Haski, founder of the Rue 89 news website, agrees. "The first lady's tweet opened the floodgates," he said. "Things will never be the same again."

Cisco Squeaks Past Microsoft In Gartner UC Ranking

Despite its strength in networking and telephony, Cisco has been chasing Microsoft in unified communications. Now, mobile emphasis may be giving it an edge.

For the first time, Cisco Systems has inched past Microsoft in the Gartner Magic Quadrant analysis of the unified communications market.

The Gartner analysis isn't really a linear ranking, instead showing major vendors mapped out on a chart composed of four quadrants (niche players, challengers, visionaries, and leaders). Still, placement in the upper right hand corner of the chart reserved for leaders is a prized position. Despite its strong position in networking and Internet telephony, Cisco until now has been lagging slightly behind Microsoft in unified communications ? that is, the ability to deliver a bundle of communication and collaboration services that includes voice, video, online presence indicators, instant messaging, and conferencing.

"This is a big change," said Michael Smith, director of marketing for collaboration solutions at Cisco.

Well, maybe not that big. Last year, Gartner showed Cisco and Microsoft virtually neck and neck, but gave the edge to Microsoft. This year, they are still neck and neck, but Cisco has inched ahead.

Microsoft has staked out a strong position by making synchronous collaboration an extension of the product family that includes Microsoft Office and SharePoint. The Microsoft Lync UC product has proven attractive to major corporations like AstraZeneca, as well as smaller businesses. Gartner continues to give the Microsoft product a strong rating, saying it is improving all the time.

The other vendors Gartner classifies as leaders are Avaya and Siemens Enterprise Communications. Leaders are considered to have the best combination of vision and ability to execute. The report also evaluated vendors classified as challengers (including IBM, Alcatel-Lucent, and NEC), meaning that they are strong enterprise players who are still developing their product vision. Gartner recognized Mitel as a visionary for its strategy of combining UC and virtualization.

Gartner said four factors that were important to this year's rankings were support for a variety of mobile devices and operating systems, support for open standards, cloud deployment options, and broad appeal to the corporate constituencies affected by the choice of a UC solution.

Smith believes Cisco's support for devices like the iPad counted in its favor, in contrast to Microsoft's more limited and tentative support for non-Windows devices. Gartner did cite broad mobile OS support as one area of concern for Microsoft customers.

Gartner credited Cisco with "full UC functionality, including video and telephony, on a broad range of clients, including Apple laptops, iPads and iPhones, as well as on Android platforms." Cisco also won praise for attractive hybrid cloud and on-premises deployment options. On the other hand, Gartner said Cisco offers a complex portfolio of products that remains "complex to understand and manage."

Cancer Drug Shows Potential to Prevent Learning Disabilities ...

By Janice Wood Associate News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on August 30, 2012

Cancer Drug Shows Potential to Prevent Learning DisabilitiesA new mouse study shows that a drug originally developed to stop cancerous tumors may hold the potential to prevent abnormal brain cell growth and learning disabilities in some children ? if they can be diagnosed early enough.

According to researchers at the University of Michigan, the study sets the stage for more research on how the anti-tumor medication could be used to protect the brains of young children with the genetic disease neurofibromatosis 1, as well as other diseases that affect the same cellular signaling pathway.

Neurofibromatosis 1, or NF1, affects one in every 3,000 children, causing benign tumors to grow throughout the body, large head size, and other issues. Many children with NF1 also struggle with learning to read, write, do math, and behave well, according to researchers.

The impact on brain function is considered the most common ? and most serious ? issue caused by NF1, and often appears before other symptoms, except for brown patches on the skin that are often mistaken for birthmarks.

But while the tumors that erupt mostly later in life have been well-studied, NF1?s effect on brain function isn?t understood, the researchers note.

In the new study, the team studied neural stem cells ? a kind of master cell that can become any type of neural tissue. In newborn mice with two copies of the genetic mutation that causes NF1, neural stem cells in a key area of the brain were far more likely to produce a kind of ?helper? nerve cell called glia. They produced far fewer?neurons, which send and receive crucial signals in the brain and body.

The scientists then took aim at the abnormal cell growth by giving the mice an experimental drug that has already been used in clinical trials for advanced cancer. Called PD0325901, the drug, known as a MEK inhibitor, blocks a specific action within cells called the MEK/ERK pathway.

Mice with the NF1 mutation that got the drug from birth developed normally, in contrast to mice with the same genetic mutations that didn?t receive the drug. The untreated mice appeared normal at birth, but within a few days had become hunched and scruffy, with abnormal growth of their bodies and brain cells.

The new paper?s senior author, Yuan Zhu, Ph.D., cautioned that the drug used in the study may not be appropriate to give to children who have been diagnosed with NF1. But other MEK inhibitors are being developed against cancer.

?The important thing is that we have shown that by treating during this brief window of time early in life, when neural stem cells in a developing brain still have time to ?decide? what kind of cell to become, we can cause a lasting effect on neural development,? said Zhu, an associate professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan?s Medical School.

For a drug-based intervention to work, it would have to be given soon after developmental delays or benign tumors are noted in an infant or toddler, and after a NF1 diagnosis is made, Zhu noted.

About half of all people with NF1 inherited the mutated gene from a parent, while the other half develop it spontaneously in the womb. The disease affects individual patients very differently, he said, noting that one child born to a parent with mild NF1 can have a severe form of the disease, while their siblings can have mild or moderate symptoms.

Some people with NF1 have a ?double hit? form of the disease, where both copies of the gene are mutated in certain body cells. The second mutation, according to the scientists, likely occurs in a neural stem cell that goes on to produce unusual neural cells. These patients often have severe learning disabilities, and an enlarged corpus callosum ? a structure that connects the two halves of the brain and contains a large concentration of glia, the same cells that the mice in the new study had larger numbers of.

In addition to NF1, the researchers predict that their findings may have importance for patients with other genetic conditions that affect the same cell-signaling pathway called RAS. Collectively called neuro-cardio-facial-cutaneous (NCFC) syndromes or ?RASopathies,? they include Leopard syndrome, Noonan syndrome, Costello syndrome and Leguis syndrome. Like NFI, all these conditions affect the brains, circulation system and the face or head.

The study?s findings were reported in the journal Cell.

Barclays hit by fraud probe over Mideast investors

LONDON (AP) ? Scandal-hit Barclays bank says it's facing yet another investigation ? this one relating to the billions it raised from Middle Eastern investors back in 2008.

The bank said Wednesday that Britain's Serious Fraud Office was looking into whether Barclays was open enough about what it had paid advisers when it raised more than 5 billion pounds of emergency capital at the height of the global financial crisis.

The private lifeline helped Barclays avoid the humiliating government bailouts that the Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds were forced to accept after high-flying executives overloaded the banks with unsustainable amounts of debt.

Barclays' corporate reputation is already under siege after scandals over selling small businesses complex financial products they didn't need and revelations that the bank fixed a key market interest rate.

Complete Guidelines to Health and Fitness: What is a Gene? What ...

Every living organism has genes. Genes are a set of instructions that
decide what the organism is like, how it survives, and how it behaves in
its environment.

The genes lie in long strands of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) called chromosomes. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes - or a total of 46. A donkey has 31 pairs of chromosomes, a hedgehog has 44, and a fruit fly has just 4.

A gene consists of a long combination of four different nucleotide bases (chemicals). There are many possible combinations. The four nucleotides are:

A (adenine)
?C (cytosine)
?G (guanine)
?T (thymine)

Different combinations of the letters ACGT give people different characteristics. For example, a person with the following combination - AAACCGGTTTTT - may have green eyes, while somebody whose combination is - AAACCGGTTTAA - may have blue eyes. If fact, the last two letters - TT - and - AA - mean the color, and the first ten letters - AAACCGGTTT - mean the eye. (this gene formula is a simplification; in reality they would be much longer).

So, to recap in slightly more detail:

  • Genes carry the codes ACGT. We have thousands of genes. They are like our computer program and make each one of us what we are. A gene is a tiny section of a long DNA double helix molecule, which consists of a linear sequence of base pairs. A gene is any section along the DNA that has instructions encoded that allow a cell to produce a specific product - usually, a protein, such as an enzyme - that triggers one precise action. There are between 50,000 and 100,000 genes, and every single gene is made up of thousands, even hundreds of thousands, of chemical bases.

  • Chromosomes comes from the Greek Chroma, which means color, and Soma, which means body (chromosomes are stained very strongly by some dyes). Chromosomes are the long strands of DNA. They are organized structures of DNA and protein and are found in cells. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes. An enormous number of genes lie in each chromosome strand. Scientists say that a chromosome is a single piece of DNA which has many genes, regulatory elements and other nucleotide sequences (sequences of the letters ACGT).

?A chromosome consists of DNA and has proteins attached to it. These chromosomes are located in your body's cells, which then contain this important genetic information held in the long strands of DNA.

  • DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the chemical that appears in strands (see picture - below right). Every cell in your body has the same DNA. Each person's DNA is different - this is what makes each of us unique. DNA is made up of two long-paired strands spiraled into the famous double helix. Each strand contains millions of chemical building blocks called bases.

Your genes make you what you are

Your genes decide virtually everything about you. Here is a list of some of the basic features and characteristics than your genes are programmed to do.
Your genes decide..
  • whether you are tall or not
  • the color of your hair
  • the color of your skin
  • whether you are more likely to develop certain diseases
  • whether you are good at sports
  • how you respond to environmental triggers
  • what you look like inside and out

Our genes are our inheritance

We get our genes from our parents. Scientists say that a gene is a basic unit of heredity in a living organism. Anything that lives depends on genes. They possess the data to build and maintain cells and pass genetic information to offspring.
Each of your cells contains two sets of chromosomes - one set came from your mother while the other came from your father - male sperm and the female egg carry a single set of 23 chromosomes each - 22 autosomes and an X or Y sex chromosome. If you are female you inherited an X chromosome from each parent - if you are male you inherited an X chromosome from your mother and a Y from your father.

The Human Genome Project (HGP)

The Human Genome Project was a global project aimed at determining the sequence of the chemical pairs that make up human DNA. The HGP had another goal - to identify and map the 20,000-25,000 or so genes that make up the Human Genome.
The undertaking started in 1990, headed by James Watson who worked at the NIH (National Institutes of Health), along with other scientists from the USA, Canada, New Zealand and Great Britain. The researchers came up with a working draft in 2000. Three years later, in 2003, the Human Genome Project was just about completed. Further analysis is still being published today.
Scientists say that mapping the human genome brings us much closer to developing effective treatments for hundreds of diseases.
Not only did the HGP focus on humans, it also looked at other organisms and animals, such as the fruit fly and E. coli.
The HGP is the largest single research ever carried out in modern science. Over three billion nucleotide combinations have been found in the human genome (combinations of ACGT). The project had aimed to sequence 95% of human DNA, so far 99.99% has been sequenced.

What is Gene Therapy?

Genes are inserted into a patient's cells and tissues to treat a disease, usually a hereditary disease. This science is still in its early stages. However, there has been some success.
Scientists are currently studying various ways of treating cancer using gene therapy. One is to try to enhance a healthy cell's ability to fight cancer. Another is to target the cancer cells themselves - to destroy them or prevent their growth.

Gene testing a person's susceptibility to cancer

BRCA1 is a gene which significantly raises a woman's chances of developing breast cancer. Today, it is possible for woman to have a test to find out whether she carries that gene. BRCA1 carriers have a 50% chance of passing the anomaly to each of their children.

Genetic tests to find your ideal treatment

Scientists say that one day we will be able to test a patient to find out which specific medicines are best for him or her, depending on that person's genetic makeup. Some medicines work well for some patients, but not for others.

Will Congressman Akin Put His World View Ahead of His Pride ...

The hyperbole from the left over Todd Akin has been disgusting. The man truly believes that children who are conceived out of rape should not be killed. The Bible teaches us that God raised us up from the dust of the earth and stitched us together in our mothers? wombs.

When you believe that, as Congressman Akin does, then it is asking much to tear apart what God has stitched together.

The left would make this about his poor word choices. Some have actually accused the Congressman of being ?pro-rape.? Congressman Akin said something dumb and inarticulate. But God bless him for trying to explain why so many Christians do not believe in an exception for rape and believe that to have one could see an increase in the number of claims of rape that are not actual rapes (?legitimate? rapes in his words), but are claims of rape used to justify an abortion when abortion is otherwise prohibited.

It?s a terribly difficult position for politicians to defend, particularly in hyper-partisan climates. The Congressman tried and failed. On Thursday night he exacerbated the problem by agreeing to sit with Piers Morgan on CNN and then not showing up.

I would rather Todd Akin in the United States Senate than Claire McCaskill. He said something he should not have. Claire McCaskill voted for Obamacare.

Todd Akin should not have to withdraw from the Senate race in Missouri. But given how quickly party leaders sought to distance themselves from Todd Akin and pull money from Missouri, there is not much left for him to do. By 5 o?clock today, Todd Akin must withdraw.

Todd Akin is a Christian. He must understand that one of the greatest sins ? the greatest according to C.S. Lewis ? is pride. His pride should not keep him in the race. Todd Akin believes that Obamacare must be repealed. He believes we must take back the Senate to do so.

Given the way party leaders from Mitt Romney to John Cornyn have run from Todd Akin in the past 24 hours, Todd Akin must be willing to overcome his pride and realize that to advance his world view, he must end his campaign. The fight to take back the Senate runs through Missouri. It is a terrible burden to be now in Todd Akin?s position, knowing by staying in he could cost the Republicans the Senate and even be a drag on Mitt Romney?s chances to win Missouri.

Should he stay in the race, he will be the boogeyman in the Democrats? false claims about a war on women and the man every Republican blames should they not take the Senate.

Every politician thinks he can win. Some times he just can?t. By 5 o?clock this evening, Congressman Aiken needs to withdraw so his party can unite behind a new nominee.

On the Call: Best Buy's Interim CEO Mike Mikan

NEW YORK (AP) ? Best Buy Co. Inc. withdrew its full-year earnings forecast after reporting a 90 percent drop in net income during the second quarter, which was dragged down by restructuring charges and weak sales.

Best Buy released quarterly results a day after naming Hubert Joly, former CEO of the Carlson travel company, as its new CEO. The chain is in the midst of a very public fight with its former chairman and co-founder, Richard Schulze, who wants to take the company private.

During a conference call, interim CEO Mike Mikan spelled out the challenges faced by Best Buy and said that Joly is up to the task.

Q. What are some of the big hurdles you face and why do you think the new president will be able to spearhead a turnaround?

A. Hubert brings tremendous experience to the job...He's got local roots but he's also got a great deal of international experience and he has specific experience in corporate turnarounds, exactly what Best Buy needs at this moment.... Over the last three months, Best Buy's management team has worked to define opportunities, initiatives and actions to move the company forward.... Hubert will inherit a good deal of advanced work....

As we've been discussing for some time now, the company continues to face significant challenges. As is widely known, markets in China and Europe are facing enormous difficulties and that has had a negative impact...In the U.S., economic conditions are soft and will probably remain so for the indefinite future. Consumers remain very cautious and sales in the industry may be dampened at the moment by those who are holding back on spending as they await some highly anticipated new technology releases.

Like virtually every other competitor in the consumer electronics sector, Best Buy's second quarter reflects these realities. However, we have made progress.

Ups and Downs Within Cad Industry ? Has it Affected Business?

CAD ? Computer Aided Drafting touched new level decades back when Autodesk introduced CAD software. This software was easily accessible to an architect or engineer in the confinement of his site or office. Auto CAD became so popular that all engineering services was christened under ?CAD Services?. However this industry has witnessed it?s share of ups and down.

Late 80?s and 90?s saw tremendous spurt of growth in this industry. CAD was being used in every aspect of engineering. Be it simple drafting, construction drawings, detailing, visualization CAD services are everywhere. Slowly and gradually, CAD started becoming common and need to speed up services started rising. AutoCAD had its own limitations like complex commands, lack of automization with regards to changes etc. Construction industry was scaling new heights of growth, mechanical industry started witnessing new changes and entire new concept of visualization sinked in which made further developments inevitable.

Introduction of visualization in form of 3D Images ? Third dimension gave a realistic look to any building or component. 3D studio max brought in the first concept of modeling in 3D and then rendering subsequently followed. Scanline render and special effects using photoshop gave a good look to buildings, products and furniture. Ultimately, in early 2000 V-ray came into existence which gave a photorealistic effect to entire buildings and site around it.

With all this development and growth, one aspect that was bothering the building construction industry was increasing cost and long construction schedules. Even after AutoCAD coming into existence this concern did not seem to melt down. New software under the flag ship of Autodesk was developed to end this concern. This software was created keeping in mind the construction standards, common building construction requirement and covered most of the aspects of building analysis and construction. Building information modeling subsequently came into existence. Core purpose to bring BIM was to reduce construction cost and optimize turnaround time. Revit software brought a revolution in the construction field. Its user friendly approach, interface and automization feature eased the most complex issues. Errors that normally could be detected post construction is being spotted before construction and rectified. This has been instrumental in reducing the construction cost and time.

CAD services today are used in every engineering domain. They are broadly categorized into architectural CAD services, mechanical services, BIM services and structural services. CAD industry has seen its peaks and troughs than any industry across the globe. Recession hit several parts of the globe by 2008 year end and industry saw around 23 to 25% decline in business and employment opportunities in this industry. Every aspect like software sales, new construction projects or renovation plans saw a major downfall. Employment opportunities also took a down slide during this phase.

Lot of companies started paying more attention towards getting trained in new technologies, software and developing new business models. It looks like the situation is improving and CAD industry definitely will rise back and provide excellent job opportunities to all CAD professionals. Engineering industry is definitely regaining lost fortune and is recovering faster. Companies are already investing time and money in developing new technologies to recover the losses. This has helped companies recover their losses to greater extent.

(AP) ? These aren't your typical loos. One uses microwave energy to transform human waste into electricity. Another captures urine and uses it for flushing. And still another turns excrement into charcoal.

They are part of a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation competition to reinvent the toilet for the 2.5 billion people around the world who don't have access to modern sanitation.

Scientists from around the world have taken up the challenge, and the foundation announced some projects Tuesday that will be getting more money to take their ideas from the lab to cities.

There, local entrepreneurs will use the new technology to turn pollution into cash.

"We couldn't be happier with the response that we've gotten," Bill Gates said.

To pass the foundation's threshold for the world's next toilet, it must operate without running water, electricity or a septic system, not discharge pollutants, preferably capture energy or other resources, and operate at a cost of 5 cents a day.

The United Nations estimates disease caused by unsafe sanitation results in about half the hospitalizations in the developing world. About 1.5 million children die each year from diarrheal disease.

Scientists believe most of these deaths could be prevented with proper sanitation, along with safe drinking water and improved hygiene.

The foundation expects to field test its first prototypes within the next three years.

Most of the prototypes on display this week in the open courtyard of the foundation's Seattle headquarters turn solid waste into energy. This is both a practical and pragmatic solution to the solid waste puzzle, said Carl Hensman, program officer for the foundation's water, sanitation and hygiene team.

Many recycle waste into other usable substances such as animal feed, water for irrigation, or even just energy and water to run their own systems.

Some, like the winning project from Caltech, use chemistry and engineering to completely transform the waste.

Clement Cid, a Caltech grad student from Trouillas, France, said it has been intellectually rewarding to work with scientists from a variety of specialties.

"You can come up with great ideas," he said, adding that the toilet fair offered more opportunities for idea sharing.

Other projects on display were not so high-tech, including one from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine that sends black soldier fly larvae inside latrines and even home toilets to process waste, resulting in high quality, environmentally friendly animal feed at a cost of a penny a day.

The fly larvae project is already being field tested in Cape Town, South Africa, and the inventors are working on a kit to sell to entrepreneurs. They have had inquiries from Haiti, Sudan, Kenya and Ghana about adopting the approach.

"At the end of the day it will look very low-tech, but there's a lot of science behind it," said Walter Gibson, a medical biochemist who is part of the development team.

The Gates toilet focus started just about a year ago, and including grants announced Tuesday, $370 million in foundation dollars have been committed to reinventing the toilet. Hensman said the foundation decided to hold a toilet fair this week to show how far the scientists have gotten in that time, and to give them an opportunity to learn from each other and potentially collaborate.

Among those scheduled to attend the toilet fair were government ministers from African nations, utility workers and potential financial partners like UNICEF and Oxfam.

Reinventing the toilet has the potential to improve lives as well as the environment.

Flush toilets waste tons of potable drinking water each year, fail to recapture reusable resources like the potential energy in solid waste and are simply impractical in so many places.

Gates predicted the result of this project would reach beyond the developing world.

"If we do it right, there's every possibility that some of these designs would also be solutions for rich and middle-income countries," Gates said.

Recreating a slice of the universe: Computational approach follows thousands of galaxies over billions of years

ScienceDaily (Aug. 15, 2012) ? Scientists at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) and their colleagues at the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS) have invented a new computational approach that can accurately follow the birth and evolution of thousands of galaxies over billions of years. For the first time it is now possible to build a universe from scratch that brims with galaxies like we observe around us.

"We've created the full variety of galaxies we see in the local universe," said Mark Vogelsberger (CfA).

Our cosmic neighborhood is littered with majestic spiral galaxies like Andromeda, the Pinwheel, and the Whirlpool. Spirals are common, but previous simulations had trouble creating them. Instead, they produced lots of blobby galaxies clumped into balls, without the broad disks and outstretched arms of a typical spiral.

The new software, called Arepo, solves this problem. Created by Volker Springel (HITS), Arepo generates a full-fledged simulation of the universe, taking as input only the observed afterglow of the Big Bang and evolving forward in time for 14 billion years.

"We took all the advantages of previous codes and removed the disadvantages," explained Springel.

"Our simulations improve over previous ones as much as the Giant Magellan Telescope will improve upon any telescope that exists now," said Debora Sijacki (CfA).

(When completed later this decade, the Giant Magellan Telescope's 24.5-meter aperture will make it the largest telescope in the world.)

One of Arepo's key advantages is the geometry it uses. Previous simulations divided space into a bunch of cubes of fixed size and shape. Arepo uses a grid that flexes and moves in space to match the motions of the underlying gas, stars, dark matter, and dark energy.

The simulations ran on Harvard's Odyssey high-performance supercomputer, using in total 1024 processor cores. This fast machine allowed the scientists to compress 14 billion years into only a few months -- an endeavor that would have kept a desktop computer busy for hundreds of years!

The team's future goals include simulating much larger volumes of the universe at unprecedented resolution, thus creating the largest and most realistic model of the universe ever made.

The team consists of Mark Vogelsberger (CfA), Debora Sijacki (CfA), Dusan Keres (CfA/UCSD), Paul Torrey (CfA), Volker Springel (HITS), and Lars Hernquist (CfA). Their work is described in three papers accepted for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. Those papers can be found online at http://arxiv.org/abs/1109.1281, http://arxiv.org/abs/1109.3468, and http://arxiv.org/abs/1109.4638.

Important Matters to bear in mind when Installing Metal Roofing in ...

There are numerous things you need to take into consideration when building or looking after your house. Besides the plumbing system and utility maintenance, it's also wise to take a look at your roofing system occasionally. A lot of people overlook this. They usually think simple paint jobs may repair the entire system. Painting your roof or your ceiling can just minimize the problem. If you prefer a greater solution to your properties, you need commercial roofing Austin.

Precisely why metal roofing?

Metal roofing has turn into a well-known option nowadays. That is because it truly is proof against all climate conditions, and may final twenty to forty years without having or lesser upkeep. It is also easier to put in when compared with asphalt tiles.

Metal function

Metal roofing overlaps alone at each joint, which generates more protective sealants. It also prevents the channel water away from the wooden frames and decks. You will find also metallic frames, which overhang the buttons ahead of setting up principal tablet. This makes the paint work significantly easier, because it prevents brush marks from acquiring onto the underside with the metallic. You will find also unique rings, which safeguard the primary supporting method with the overall roof. This makes the entire base more tough when connected towards the roofing method and posts.

Underlayment

Most Austin roofers use a vapor barrier on the roof, unless you wish to install metal over shingles. The purpose of these barriers is always to reduce sweat from gathering at the base of the tin on a hot, sunny day. They'll also staple or add the vapor barrier about every one yard side to side and top to bottom. However, if you will need to to install more buttons for assistance, you should also check the roof edges of the base. Check if the barrier weighs above the existing roof edges. Reduce the excess barriers before installing the tin. Make sure the roofers use waterproof barriers to prevent leaks.

Things to consider

- Before trying to find materials, ensure to acquire the exact measurements of your roof. Most merchants cut the tins for every desired lengths. Your tin must also run the complete vertical length with the roof from leading to bottom.

- Choose which facet with the roof you wish to start with. The tin must run vertically alongside the roof from the bottom and towards the roof ridge lengthwise. Most tins are 42 inches wide. This signifies you will need to evaluate out forty inches from the edge with the current roof overhang and make a mark. You may also give allowance to ensure it will match the supporting anchor with the base. Mark the supporting anchors so you'll be able to effortlessly spot edges. Use these marks as being a reference to lay your pieces of metallic. This also applies when fixing your metallic roof.

- Make sure the screws go into the concave parts with the tin. Make sure there are caps for every single ridge you'll use. These caps generally are available in 10-foot and also you need to have to overlap them from 2-4 inches.

Johnny Pesky, beloved by Red Sox fans, dies at 92

BOSTON (AP) ? Adored by generations of Red Sox fans, Johnny Pesky was so much a part of Boston baseball that the right-field foul pole at Fenway Park was nicknamed for him.

Pesky, who played, managed and served as a broadcaster for the Red Sox in a baseball career that lasted more than 60 years, died Monday. He was 92.

Pesky died at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, according to Solimine, Landergan and Richardson funeral home in Lynn. The funeral home did not have a cause of death.

For many in the legion of Red Sox fans, their last image of Pesky will be from the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park on April 20, when the man who became the team's unofficial goodwill ambassador was moved to tears at a pregame ceremony. By then he was in a wheelchair positioned at second base, surrounded by dozens of admiring former players and a cheering crowd.

"I've had a good life with the ballclub," Pesky told The Associated Press in 2004. "I just try to help out. I understand the game, I've been around the ballpark my whole life."

Long-time Red Sox fans recall the days when Pesky was a talented shortstop and manager for the team. Younger ones saw him as avuncular presence at the Red Sox spring training camp in Fort Myers, Fla.,

A lifetime .307 hitter who was a teammate to Ted Williams, Pesky would hit grounders to Red Sox infielders with his ever-present fungo bat. He stopped doing that as he aged but still spent time sitting in a folding chair, his bat by his side, signing autographs and chatting with fans of all ages.

His No. 6 was retired by the Red Sox at a ceremony in 2008. Pesky stood under an umbrella at home plate that day, wearing the team's white home uniform.

"All of Red Sox Nation mourns the loss of 'Mr. Red Sox,' Johnny Pesky," Boston mayor Thomas Menino said. "He loved the game and he loved the fans ? and we loved him. His dedication to the sport and his passion to improve the game through the mentorship of young players will be sorely missed. Our hearts go out to the Red Sox organization and all of Johnny's family and many friends."

Even though Pesky was a fan favorite, Pesky still had his own place of notoriety in the Red Sox' drought of 86 years without a World Series title. It's a place that many now think is undeserved.

Pesky was often blamed for holding the ball for a split second as Enos Slaughter made his famous "Mad Dash" from first base to score the winning run for the St. Louis Cardinals against the Red Sox in Game 7 of the 1946 World Series.

With the score tied 3-3, Slaughter opened the bottom of the eighth inning with a single. With two outs, Harry Walker hit the ball to center field. Pesky, playing shortstop, took the cutoff throw from outfielder Leon Culberson, and according to some newspaper accounts, hesitated before throwing home. Slaughter, who ran through the stop sign at third base, was safe at the plate, and the best-of-seven series went to the Cardinals.

Pesky always denied any indecision, and analysis of the film appeared to back him up, but the myth persisted.

"In my heart, I know I didn't hold the ball," Pesky once said.

Born John Michael Paveskovich in Portland, Ore., Pesky first signed with the Red Sox organization in 1939 at the urging of his mother. A Red Sox scout had wooed her with flowers and his father with fine bourbon. His parents, immigrants from what is now Croatia, didn't understand baseball, but they did understand that the Red Sox were the best fit for their son even though other teams offered more money.

He played two years in the Red Sox minor league system before making his major league debut in 1942.

That season he set the team record for hits by a rookie with 205, a mark that stood until 1997 when fellow Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra, with whom he became very close, had 209. He also hit .331 his rookie year, second in the American League only to Williams, who hit .356.

Pesky spent the next three years in the Navy during World War II, although he did not see combat. He was back with the Red Sox through 1952, playing with the likes of Williams, who died in 2002, Bobby Doerr and Dom DiMaggio, before being traded to the Detroit Tigers. (In 2003, author David Halberstam told the story of Pesky, Williams, Doerr and DiMaggio in his book "The Teammates: A Portrait of a Friendship.")

Pesky spent two years with the Tigers and Washington Senators before starting a coaching career that included a two-year stint as Red Sox manager in 1963 and 1964. He came back to the Red Sox in 1969 and stayed there, even filling in as interim manager in 1980 after the club fired Don Zimmer.

The right field foul pole at Fenway Park, just 302 feet from home plate, is named the Pesky Pole in his honor even though Pesky hit just 17 homers in his career, six at Fenway Park. The term was coined by former Red Sox pitcher Mel Parnell, who during a broadcast in the 1950s, recalled Pesky winning a game for him with a home run around the pole.

That tale, much like the Pesky "held the ball" story, appears to be a myth because team records show that Pesky never hit a home run at Fenway in which Parnell was the winning pitcher.

Pesky is survived by a son, David. His wife, Ruth, whom he married in 1944, died in 2005.

Turner buys sports website Bleacher Report

(AP) ? Turner Broadcasting System said Monday that it has bought sports news website Bleacher Report in a strategic move meant to help sell more ads and cover the cost of sports programming.

David Levy, Turner president of sales, distribution and sports, said the purchase will also provide an outlet for highlight videos and news regarding sports that are already shown on TBS and TNT, including professional basketball, baseball, auto racing, golf and the NCAA March Madness college basketball tournament.

"Not only will you get an incredible article written, you might also get video now," he said.

TV networks have been facing higher costs for rights to various sporting events. Having Bleacher Report will give Turner more outlets to show video from those games and make money through ads. Levy said Bleacher Report expands Turner's ability to sell ad packages that cover not just TV but websites and mobile properties as well.

Bleacher Report may have tie-ins such as a fantasy sports offering or appearances by its writers during Turner sports broadcasts in the future.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Bleacher Report will not likely be a recipient of videos of full games, Levy said. Such offerings are known as "TV Everywhere" and require viewers to log in and prove that they pay for a channel package through a traditional satellite or cable TV company. Longer video of sports games on TNT or TBS are more likely to be offered on websites such as TNT.tv or TBS.com, he said.

TBS is part of Time Warner Inc.'s Turner television unit. Turner Sports already manages the websites of the NBA, NCAA and PGA and oversees ad sales for NASCAR.com. Combined, the sites reach 86 million visitors a month.

Bleacher Report, which is based in San Francisco, adds another 10 million monthly visitors.

Komen president resigning, founder shifting roles

DALLAS (AP) ? The president and the founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure are stepping down, the nation's largest breast cancer foundation said in announcing a major leadership shake-up. The high-profile departures come amid continuing fallout from Komen's decision earlier this year to briefly end funding for Planned Parenthood.

President Liz Thompson will leave Komen next month and founder Nancy Brinker, who has long been the public face of the charity, will relinquish her chief executive's role for a position focused on fundraising and strategic planning, according to a statement released Wednesday by the Dallas-based organization.

The foundation announced in January that it had decided to eliminate its funding for Planned Parenthood for breast-cancer screening. Komen said it made the decision because Planned Parenthood was the focus of a congressional investigation, which was launched at the urging of anti-abortion activists.

Komen restored the funding after a three-day firestorm, but it didn't quell the criticism. At least five other high-ranking executives also have resigned, and organizers of many Race for the Cure events saw their participation numbers drop.

Brinker founded the organization in 1982, two years after her sister, Susan G. Komen, died of breast cancer. Thompson joined the group in 2008 to head research and scientific programs, and she was promoted to president in 2010.

According to the statement, which makes no reference to the Planned Parenthood decision or fallout, Thompson said the time was right for her to pursue other opportunities. She hailed the organization's leadership in pursuing a cure for breast cancer and for helping women and men with cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment.

"That legacy will continue. It has been a privilege and an honor to serve in this role," she said.

Brinker praised Thompson's work in expanding Komen's influence in scientific, community health, advocacy and global programs. As for her changed role, Brinker said she assumed the chief executive's duties at the request of the foundation's board in 2009.

"Three years into that role, and 32 years after my promise to my sister to end breast cancer, I want now to focus on Susan G. Komen's global mission and raising resources to bring our promise to women all around the world," she said.

Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, praised both women for their "profound contributions to women's health" and for helping elevate the importance of breast cancer detection and prevention. She also noted that "the Komen-funded Planned Parenthood programs have helped thousands of women in rural and underserved communities get breast health education, screenings, and referrals for mammograms. We are proud to continue this work together."

Some Komen affiliates were among those publicly opposed to cutting off Planned Parenthood. In the days after Komen decided to restore the funding, Komen policy chief Karen Handel resigned. She had opposed abortion as a Republican candidate for Georgia governor and had become a target of those angry about the decision to halt funding to Planned Parenthood.

Her resignation was followed, in quick succession, by Katrina McGhee, executive vice president and chief marketing officer; Nancy Macgregor, vice president of global networks; and Joanna Newcomb, director of affiliate strategy and planning.

And organizers of individual Race for the Cure events ? 5K runs and walks that account for most of the charity's fundraising ? saw participation decline by as much as 30 percent. Most also saw their fundraising numbers sink, although a couple of races brought in more money.

Race organizers have acknowledged the effect of the Planned Parenthood debacle, which angered people on both sides of the abortion debate.

In response to questions Wednesday about the controversy, Komen spokeswoman Andrea Rader said "I think Liz (Thompson) made clear in her statement that we feel that we've moved past that."

The foundation has invested $1.3 billion in community programs over 30 years to pay for screenings, education, and financial and psychological support for those fighting breast cancer, according to Komen's statement.

After NASA's Curiosity rover lands on Mars this weekend, one of its first orders of business will be to call home.

Mission managers back on Earth will be eagerly awaiting news of the $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory rover, which is due to land at 10:30 p.m. PDT on Aug. 5 (1:30 a.m. EDT, 0530 GMT, Aug. 6), beginning a two-year mission. In fact, for the first 90 days of the mission, controllers will work together as if each day were 24 hours and 40 minutes long ? the approximate length of a Martian day.

"It's to get the most use possible for the rover while it's fresh and new on Mars," says Ashwin Vasavada, MSL's deputy project scientist.?"Ideally, we'd do it for the next 10 years, but the reality is, after 90 days it's better for everyone to go back to Earth time."

Controllers on Earth will have three ways of hailing Curiosity as it trundles around Gale Crater. Two are direct links through NASA's?Deep Space Network, a worldwide collection of antennas. It provides both a fixed low-gain antenna, ?best for basic commands and emergencies, and a pointable high-gain antenna for complex commands.?[11 Amazing Things NASA's Mars Rover Can Do]

Curiosity also has a higher-speed ultra-high frequency (UHF) communications system that can send signals to spacecraft orbiting Mars, which in turn would relay them to Earth.

To send back imagery, Curiosity must stay in touch with the?Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter?and Mars Odyssey spacecraft, two probes orbiting Mars that each can talk to the rover twice a day. (Odyssey is currently recovering?from the loss of one of its three reaction wheels.)

"The high-gain antenna only gives us a moderate amount of bandwidth," Vasavada told SPACE.com. "We can transmit a series of commands every morning. But it's not enough to transmit hundreds of images every day."

For navigation purposes, the rover has two guidance systems on board. One keeps the rover apprised of its position on the Red Planet, which is needed to find Earth in the sky and keep in contact with NASA. The other system calculates how close Curiosity is to rocks and other obstacles.

"For that system, we don't care exactly where we are in the universe," Vasavada said. "We care about it if we can shoot at this rock with our laser or not."

For measuring the distance to rocks and other objects, Curiosity will use several cameras to create stereo range maps and gain a three-dimensional view of its surroundings.

Controllers then must decide how Curiosity will guide itself to the target. It can use a "blind" mode, where it is told to drive a certain distance in one direction, or it can switch to a hazard-avoidance situation, in which the rover frequently checks the environment to make sure it can move safely.

Curiosity has sensors to sense if it's slipping, and it will stop movement immediately if it drops beyond a certain threshold. A previous rover, Spirit,?ended its journey in a sand trap, but Vasavada says Curiosity's slip-avoidance system was not necessarily included in response to Spirit's fate.

"You just have to make a risk assessment before you send the command," he says. "Spirit's problem was it was a layered surface. What was on the surface tricked everyone involved into thinking it was safe to drive on, and then it punched through that layer."

With Curiosity, "we're going to be very careful and have this group of scientists and engineers work together every time we command a drive."
