Power restoration in snowy East could take days (AP)

HARTFORD, Conn. ? Residents across the Northeast faced the prospect of days without electricity or heat Monday after an early-season storm dumped as much as 30 inches of wet, heavy snow that snapped trees and power lines, closed hundreds of schools, and disrupted plans for Halloween trick-or-treating.

Communities from Maryland to Maine that suffered through a tough winter last year followed by a series of floods and storms went into now-familiar emergency mode as roads closed, shelters opened and regional transit was suspended or delayed.

The storm's lingering effects, including power failures and hundreds of closed schools, will probably outlast the snow. Temperatures are expected to begin rising Monday and the snow will start melting, the National Weather Service said.

The early nor'easter had utility companies struggling to restore electricity to more than 3 million homes and businesses. By early Monday, the number without power was still above 2 million but falling. But officials in some states warned it could be days or even a week before residents have power again.

Trees, branches and power lines still littered roads and rail lines, leading to a tough Monday morning commute for many. Motorists hunted for open gas stations as power failures rendered pumps inoperable; at a 7-Eleven in Hartford, two dozen cars waited early Monday in a line that stretched into the street and disrupted traffic.

"There's no gas anywhere," said Debra Palmisano, of Plainville, who spent most of the morning looking around the capital city. "It's like we're in a war zone. It's pretty scary, actually."

Some local officials canceled or postponed Halloween activities, fearful that young trick-or-treaters could wander into areas with downed power lines or trees ready to topple over.

"With so many wires down ... the sidewalks will not be safe for pedestrians (Monday) night," Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton told The Hartford Courant.

The snowstorm smashed record snowfall totals for October and worsened as it moved north. Communities in western Massachusetts were among the hardest hit. Snowfall totals topped 27 inches in Plainfield, and nearby Windsor got 26 inches.

In New Hampshire's capital of Concord, more than 22 inches fell, weeks ahead of the usual first measurable snowfall. States of emergency were declared in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and parts of New York.

West Milford, N.J., about 45 miles northwest of New York City, had 19 inches Sunday. Gov. Chris Christie declared statewide damage to utilities worse than that wrought by Hurricane Irene, a deadly storm that blew through the state in August.

Things were similar in Connecticut, where the power loss of 800,000 broke a record set by Irene. By early Monday, around 400,000 people lacked power in New Jersey and more than 750,000 in Connecticut.

Compounding the storm's impact were unfallen leaves, which gave the snow something extra to hang onto and loaded branches with tremendous weight, snapping them off and sending them plunging onto power lines and across roads and homes.

"Look at this, look at all the damage," said Jennifer Burckson, 49, after she came outside Sunday morning in South Windsor to find that a massive branch had smashed her car's back windshield. Branches on trees that didn't break were weighed down so much that their leaves brushed snow on the ground.

Along the coast and in such cities as Boston, the relatively warm ocean helped keep snowfall totals much lower. Washington received a trace of snow, tying a 1925 record for the date. New York City's Central Park set a record for both the date and for October with 1.3 inches ? not much by normal standards but enough to threaten 1,000 trees in the sprawling urban reserve.

The snowstorm was blamed for at least 12 deaths, mostly caused by falling trees, traffic accidents or electrocutions. Six people died in Pennsylvania alone.

Amtrak had suspended service on several routes, and one train from Chicago to Boston got stuck overnight in Palmer, Mass. The 48 passengers had food and heat, a spokeswoman said, and were taken by bus Sunday to their destinations.

North of New York City, dozens of motorists were rescued by state troopers after spending 10 hours or more stranded on snowy highways in Dutchess and Putnam counties. Dimitra Richardson and her son Dana, of Malverne, N.Y., were among them.

"It couldn't be helped; nature acts whenever it wants," said Richardson, an 82-year-old retired literature professor and dean at Adelphi University. "The authorities tried their best, but it seems like they were totally unprepared."

In the New York village that was the setting of Washington Irving's Gothic tale "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," officials posted online that the town's annual Haunted Hayride was called off because of broken limbs and dangling branches along the route.

Sharon Martovich of Southbury, Conn., who was grocery shopping Sunday morning in nearby Newtown at one of the few businesses open for miles, said she hoped the power would come back on in time for her husband's Halloween tradition of playing "Young Frankenstein" on a giant screen in front of their house.

"We would be really sad and it would disappoint a lot of people if we can't play `Young Frankenstein,'" she said. But no matter what, they will make sure the eight or so children who live in the neighborhood don't miss out on trick-or-treating.

"Either way we will get the giant flashlights and we will go," she said.

She was already making the best of the power failure. After the lights went out around 4 p.m. Saturday, she invited neighbors over for an impromptu Halloween party with wine and quesadillas in front of her propane fireplace.

Across the region, many weather-weary Northeasterners were trying to take the storm in stride after a string of two harsh winters ? many communities set or approached snowfall records last winter ? followed by flooding from tropical systems Irene and Lee.

"You had this storm, you had Hurricane Irene, you had the flooding last spring and you had the nasty storms last winter," Tom Jacobsen said Sunday while getting coffee at a convenience store in Hamilton Township, N.J. "I'm starting to think we really ticked off Mother Nature somehow because we've been getting spanked by her for about a year now."

Doug Burdi, a scientist from Arlington, Mass., northwest of Boston, had the day off Monday because the pharmaceutical company he works for lost power. Burdi said he's not yet ready to worry about another harsh winter, despite the intensity of the early storm.

"Let's call it a freak. It makes us feel better when we think of it that way," he said. "I don't want to be fatalistic about it."

The National Weather Service acknowledged that residents shouldn't necessarily expect "Snowtober" a harbinger of a hard winter to come. Long-term models indicate a slightly drier start to the season, although there's a chance of above-normal precipitation later on, said Aaron Tyburski, a meteorologist in State College, Pa.

"There's always going to be anomalous events," he said. "While it is quite an event, we may go the next month and not get any snow."

Keen On ? It?s Official: Privacy Is Dead (TCTV)

Ooyala Backlot Web-9Yes, it?s really true. Nobody can hide anything anymore in our digital age of transparency. And thus, Dov Seidman, author of the re-released?How?and CEO of?LRN, says we have entered an ?era of behavior? in which we can no longer separate our private and public lives. As Seidman told me when we caught up earlier this week on Skype, the era of behavior means that our reputations now always ?precede us?. And this ?unprecedented transparency? compounds the possibility of doing both good and evil. For Seidman, this is all excellent news.

Obama voters, Muslims need not apply for Texas gun course (Reuters)

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) ? A central Texas gun dealer ran radio ads advising "Socialist" liberals, those who voted for President Barack Obama, Arabs and Muslims that they need not apply for his concealed gun license class.

Crockett Keller, who owns Keller's Riverside Store, ran the ads on the radio station in his rural hometown of Mason, Texas, which is 120 miles west of the state capital of Austin.

"If you are a Socialist liberal and/or voted for the current campaigner in chief, please do not take this class," Keller said in the ad. "You have already proven that you cannot make a knowledgeable and prudent decision as required under the law."

"Also, if you are a non-Christian Arab, or Muslim, I will not teach you the class," Keller said in the radio ad.

Keller said he is simply exercising his freedom to teach concealed handgun license classes to whomever he wants. He said he has received "hundreds" of calls from Americans who support his stance.

"I should have had the class next week instead of this week, I could have had 500 people in it," Keller said on Friday.

He said he was not joking when he put the lines about socialists in his commercial, because he knows some socialist liberals and did not want them to enroll in the class.

"I didn't want them to show up and have to tell them no," he said.

The Texas Department of Public Safety, which oversees the concealed carry program, and licenses instructors, said in a statement that "certified instructors are required to comply with all applicable state and federal statutes, and conduct by an instructor that denied service to individuals on the basis of race, ethnicity, or religion would place that instructor's certification at risk."

The department said it had begun an investigation into the matter, and would "take appropriate administrative action based on the findings of from the investigation."

Adults in Texas are allowed to carry concealed weapons if they have completed a class such as the one Keller teaches.

Keller wrapped up his radio by saying: "With no shame, I'm Crockett Keller. Thank you, and may God bless."

Pastebin Surpasses 10 Million ?Active? Pastes

pastebinIt took 8 years for Pastebin.com (which, for the unassociated, is sort of like the Internet's clipboard. Anyone can paste in a big ol' wall of text and share it with anyone else, often anonymously) to reach 1 million "active" (read: not spam or expired) pastes. In the year and a half since, it's spiked all the way up to 10 million. Interestingly enough, Pastebin's original owner chose to sell it off just before the massive uptick ? bet you can't guess why!

Congressman John Olver of Massachusetts to retire (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Democratic congressman John Olver of Massachusetts says he will retire at the end of his term.

The 75-year-old congressman announced on Wednesday that he would step down from his western Massachusetts seat because of family circumstances. His wife is ill with cancer.

Olver's decision comes as Massachusetts officials wrestle with a redistricting process that will reduce the state's congressional seats from 10 to nine.

Olver has held his seat since 1991 and was a member of the House Appropriations panel. He is a former college professor.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich offers better gaming support (Appolicious)

The release of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is heightening consumer anticipation over new Android devices. Motorola is planning to release its first gadget with the latest OS within just six weeks. The updated Android platform shows promise for the gaming world as well, with support for game controllers. Developers found this unexpected nugget when looking through the Android 4.0 SDK, marking the first time Google?s mobile OS has natively supported game controllers.

There are hacks that allow you to use a PS3 or WiiMote controller with Android phones, but native support means that Android anticipates a lot more activity from the gaming world. While there?s still no word on exactly which controllers will be supported, the expectation is that Bluetooth controllers will be included, as well as USB-connected controllers, such as those used for the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360. Given the success of the Xperia PLAY?s game-derived button layout, support for game controllers would further open up options for developers creating titles for mobile (and even large-screen) use.

On a slightly different note, PlayStation support for Android has reared its head in another manner, with the return of psx4droid to the Android Market. The popular PlayStation emulator was kicked out the Android Market around the same time the Xperia PLAY was launched, but a new listing from a new developer has been confirmed as the real psx4droid app. It?s got some known issues at this early stage, and there?s no telling how long it will manage to remain available in the market.

Gaming is lucrative for Android

Native support for apps continues to grow, as third party platforms enable cross-device and cross-system capabilities. Appcelerator is one such provider, acquiring Particle Code to expand its HTML5 support. Particle Code is a company that appeals to game developers, partly due to its heavy focus on the developer community. The deal closes a gap for Appcelerator, which doesn?t have a strong offering for game developers. The integration of Particle Code technology will make Appcelerator?s Titanium platform more game-friendly.

Gaming has certainly become a lucrative market for Android, encouraging much consolidation across the board. G5 Entertainment and HipSoft have also teamed up to bring the entire Build-a-lot series to Android, looking to take its PC success mobile.

Libya's transitional leader declares liberation (AP)

BENGHAZI, Libya ? Libya's transitional leader declared his country's liberation on Sunday, three days after the hated dictator Moammar Gadhafi was captured and killed.

He called on Libyans to show "patience, honesty and tolerance" and eschew hatred as they embark on rebuilding the country at the end of an 8-month civil war.

The transitional government leader Mustafa Abdul-Jalil set out a vision for the post-Gadhafi future with an Islamist tint, saying that Islamic Sharia law would be the "basic source" of legislation in the country and that existing laws that contradict the teachings of Islam would be nullified. In a gesture that showed his own piety, he urged Libyans not to express their joy by firing in the air, but rather to chant "Allahu Akbar," or God is Great. He then stepped aside and knelt to offer a brief prayer of thanks.

"This revolution was looked after by God to achieve victory," he told the crowd at the declaration ceremony in the eastern city of Benghazi, the birthplace of the uprising against Gadhafi began. He thanked those who fell in the fight against Gadhafi's forces. "This revolution began peacefully to demand the minimum of legitimate rights, but it was met by excessive violence."

Abdul-Jalil said new banks would be set up to follow the Islamic banking system, which bans charging interest. For the time being, he said interest would be canceled from any personal loans already taken out less than 10,000 Libyan dinars (about $7,500).

He also announced that all military personnel and civilians who have taken part in the fight against Gadhafi would be promoted to the rank above their existing one. He said a package of perks would later be announced for all fighters.

"Thank You, thank you to the fighters who achieved victory, both civilians and military," he said. He also paid tribute to the Gulf Cooperation Council, a six-nation alliance led by Saudi Arabia, The Arab League and the European Union. NATO, which aided the anti-Gadhafi fighters with airstrikes, performed its task with "efficiency and professionalism."

Google co-founder finally most popular on Google+

Google+

By Rosa Golijan

The mood at Google Headquarters must be celebratory right now. After all, one of the company's co-founders is finally more popular on Google+?than Mark Zuckerberg, the man behind Facebook.

It was slightly amusing ? at least to those of us who enjoy simple irony???that Mark Zuckerberg managed to stay on top of both Larry Page and Sergey Brin for so long, but a site called?Google+ Statistics?reveals that the joke's over.

Google+ Statistics has been tracking the popularity of Google+ users based on how often they're "circled" from the very start and while its numbers lag a bit behind the action, it does already show Page as the champion of the leader board:

Google+ Statistics

Zuckerberg is in a close second, followed by musicians Britney Spears and Snoop Dogg. Google's other co-founder, Brin, is stuck in fifth place.

No word as to how Page finally beat Zuckerberg or why Brin is less loved than a guy who likes to end words with -izzle and a gal who spends more time on tabloid covers than concert stages.

UN council elections head into extra rounds

(AP) ? Pakistan, Morocco, Guatemala, and Togo were elected to two-year U.N. Security Council terms on Friday, but the final decision on a fifth seat was postponed until next week.

U.N. General Assembly President Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser said voting will continue Monday after a ninth found of voting found neither of the two countries vying for the East Europe seat able to secure the two-thirds majority needed to join the United Nations' most powerful body.

The last tally had 113 votes for Azerbaijan and 77 for Slovenia. Hungary, which also had been a candidate for the sole East Europe slot, was knocked out of the running in an earlier round.

In Friday's voting, U.N. General Assembly members elected Pakistan, Morocco and Guatemala in the first round. Togo was elected in the third round.

The new members will assume their posts on Jan. 1 and serve through the end of 2013.

Security Council seats are highly coveted because they give countries a strong voice in matters dealing with international peace and security.

"We are honored and privileged to join such an esteemed body and look forward to the positive contributions we will make to its work in maintaining and promoting international peace and security," said Togo President Faure Gnassingbe, who traveled to New York for the vote.

The new makeup puts Pakistan on the council alongside its regional rival India, which like Colombia, Germany, Portugal and South Africa is serving a two-year term that wraps up at the end of 2012. They'll also serve with the five permanent, veto-wielding members: China, France, Russia, Britain and the United States.

"We had a very tough fight," Pakistani Ambassador Abdullah Hussain Haroon said. "Hopefully we will be working well with all of the other council members, especially India."

Because Guatemala has never recognized a Palestinian state, the new council may also be less inclined to support the Palestinians' request for U.N. membership in the unlikely chance the bid carries into the new year. Palestinian diplomats said this week they are trying to muster support for a Nov. 11 vote.

The only certain winner going into Friday's election was Guatemala, which ran unopposed for the sole seat for Latin America and the Caribbean. Two seats for Africa, one for Asia and one for Eastern Europe were all contested.

The five new members replace Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Gabon, Lebanon and Nigeria.

Because ballots are secret, multiple rounds of votes are common in Security Council elections. In 2007, a runoff between Guatemala and Venezuela went 47 rounds before Panama was finally offered, and accepted, as the Latin America candidate.

Don't panic: The animal's guide to hitchhiking

ScienceDaily (Oct. 20, 2011) ? New research suggests that hitch-hiking, once believed to be the exclusive domain of beat poets and wanderers, is in fact an activity that daring members of the animal kingdom engage in. And it may lead to a serious ecological problem.

Dr David Chapple, Dr Bob Wong and Sarah Simmonds from Monash University's School of Biological Sciences, have published two complementary studies on invasive species, which are taking the opportunity to jump on board freight and cargo transports to explore, and settle, new lands.

The researchers found that particular personality traits may equip animals to become successful, if unintentional, invaders.

Dr Chapple said the process of moving to new territory was difficult and only naturally bold species were able to do this successfully.

"Not only do animals need to be in the right place at the right time in order to be inadvertently transported by humans, but they also need to be able to survive the often harsh and lengthy journey inside consignments of freight.

"When they arrive at the new destination, the stowaways have to contend with being strangers in a strange land and successfully adapt to new environments. In the face of these challenges, the new colonists must also thrive and reproduce before spreading out across the landscape," Dr Chapple said.

Dr Wong said it was the ability to overcome these significant hurdles that makes successful invaders a formidable threat to native wildlife.

"The incidence and impact of unintentional invasion is increasing with globalisation -- as we encroach further and further into the natural environment, animals have had more opportunities to jump on board our various transports. Given this increase, and the potential impact on biodiversity, it's important that we understand this phenomenon better.

"Personality and behavioural traits are an important and, to date, unexplored component of the success of these species' invasions," Dr Wong said.

Ms Simmonds said the researchers examined whether personality differences between two species of garden skinks in eastern Australia could explain why one of the species has managed to spread overseas and the other has not.

"Our research found that the successful skink invader was bolder and tended to be more exploratory, thereby increasing its chances of entering cargo ships.

"Once on board, the lizards' tendency to hide probably helps them evade biosecurity checks and reach their destination undetected," Ms Simmonds said.

The researchers emphasised that factors besides behavioural and personality traits, including diet and the suitability of the new habitat, affect the success of biological invasion; however, these factors did not tell the whole story.

Will Mitt Romney's 'brutal' 'Rick Perry's a moron' ad backfire? (The Week)

New York ? Romney released a web ad painting Perry as an inarticulate buffoon who's unable to debate ? or lead the U.S. Then he pulled the ad

Mitt Romney and Texas Gov. Rick Perry got in each other's face during Tuesday night's Republican presidential debate in Las Vegas, but the personal attacks didn't end with the debate, they just moved online. Both candidates used the debate in online ads to highlight various gaffes made by the other ? but Romney pulled his hard-hitting spot, a mix of awkward Perry debate moments and clips of TV analysts trash-talking the Texas governor. (Watch the ad below) The Romney campaign said CNN, which hosted the debate, asked that the ad be pulled due to copyright issues ? CNN confirmed the request ? but not everyone's buying that explanation. Did Romney cross a line?

Romney just jumped the shark: Romney's selective editing of debate footage to make Perry look like "blithering idiot" is simply "disgusting," says Bryan Preston in Pajamas Media. And his decision to "throw a punch well below the belt, then pull it," tells us a lot: Romney is rattled, he's willing to tear his party apart to win, and he's scared of Perry. "This ad may mark a turning point in the GOP primary, and the beginning of Mitt Romney's fall from frontrunner status."
"Romney launches disgusting attack ad against a fellow Republican..."

No, this "brutal" ad could cripple Perry: Team Romney probably knows what it's doing with this "Rick Perry's a moron" ad, says Allahpundit in Hot Air. No doubt Romney will try to spin this "symphony of Gump-ishness" as a critique of Perry's debating skills, but it's pretty clear that the real point is that "he's stupid." If the impression sticks, it could be devastating to Perry. Being a bad debater doesn't disqualify you from being president, but "being an idiot in general does."
"Brutal new Romney ad: Rick Perry's a moron..."

This smells like a stunt: Romney could have yanked the ad because it "didn't get a glowing reception among right-wing blogs," says Max Read in Gawker. Or perhaps it's a sort of "we pulled this ad out of the decency of our hearts, so please, stop replaying it constantly" sneak play to make it go viral. But the whole episode is weird. "The ad's not really that 'brutal,' as these things go," but it's personal and direct enough to give Perry enough of a sympathy boost to revive his campaign.
"Here's the 'brutal' ad attacking Rick Perry..."

Sony Ericsson planning to bring ICS to 2011 Xperia line

Xperia Arc S

We've already heard HTC's thoughts on Ice Cream Sandwich, and now Sony Ericsson has revealed its plans for the next version of Android. According to a statement on the manufacturer's Dutch Facebook page, SE plans to bring Android 4.0 to its 2011 Xperia line, which includes phones like the Xperia Arc and Xperia Play.

Here's a translation of the statement from Sony Ericsson Nederland --

We are planning to upgrade our 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio to the next Android platform, following Gingerbread 2.3.4. The official Sony Ericsson communication about software upgrades will always be what my international colleagues publish on our Blog: http://blogs.sonyericsson.com/

So great news for owners of those devices, and proof that SE wasn't kidding when it promised to step up its game back in January. Looks like we'll be avoiding a repeat of last year's unpleasantness.

(AP) ? Three years after his surprising wins in Southern states, President Barack Obama's re-election campaign is doubling down in the region, hoping to turn changing demographics into electoral wins and offset potential losses in traditional swing states next year.

Obama's Southern strategy is at the heart of his three-day bus trip this week through North Carolina and Virginia. In 2008 he became the first Democratic presidential candidate to win in those Republican strongholds in a generation.

With 28 electoral votes between them, wins in North Carolina and Virginia could help Obama make up for defeats in Rust Belt states like Ohio and Indiana, which he won in 2008 but could be hard-pressed to carry next year.

The president's bus tour started Monday in Asheville, N.C., whose mountains have attracted retirees from the Northeast, and took Obama through rural swaths of the Blue Ridge Mountains. He spent the night in Greensboro, where four black students launched a sit-in at a Woolworth's lunch counter to protest segregation in 1960, a year before Obama was born.

On Tuesday, Obama was making stops in rural Emporia, Va., and Hampton, Va., where the region's large number of black voters helped him carry the state three years ago. Obama and first lady Michelle Obama were discussing veterans' issues on Wednesday at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Hampton, Va.

Both states have seen economic and demographic changes that could alter the politics. North Carolina's economy has shifted from textiles and tobacco to banking and research, while Virginia's population has boomed in the state's northern suburbs outside Washington, D.C., with the expansion of large defense contractors and firms tied to the federal government.

Along his bus tour, Obama was making unscheduled stops at restaurants and general stores, giving him a chance to engage in the type of personal politics that is so prevalent in presidential campaigns but hard to come by in the White House.

Obama was the first Democrat to carry Virginia since Lyndon Johnson in 1964 and the first to win North Carolina since Jimmy Carter in 1976.

Yet picking up states in the South again could be difficult. Obama's poll numbers in North Carolina and Virginia are down, in line with national trends. A recent Elon University poll put the president's approval rating in North Carolina at 42 percent, and a Quinnipiac University poll had it at 45 percent in Virginia.

That has Obama's campaign putting both states near the top of its priority list and opening three offices in North Carolina and one in Virginia, with more to come. The Democratic Party will hold its convention in Charlotte, N.C., next summer, and North Carolina and Virginia are already showing up frequently on Obama's travel itinerary, a trend that is expected to continue through the election.

"My intention is to win North Carolina again like we did last time," Obama said in an interview Monday with Charlotte TV station WCNC. "It will be close because obviously folks are frustrated with the challenges that we still face in the economy."

Obama's Southern strategy extends beyond the two states.

His campaign plans to compete heavily in Florida, the ultra-swing state that decided the 2000 election, and campaign officials consider Georgia a place where they could challenge Republicans on their turf. Obama lost Georgia by 5 percentage points in 2008, but Democrats see potential in the influx of black and Hispanic voters in suburban areas outside Atlanta.

"It won't be easy," said Mike Berlon, chairman of the Georgia Democratic Party. "But we are working to register new voters and we think the demographics are on our side."

Southern Democrats suffered big losses in last year's midterm elections. Twenty Democrats in Congress from across the region lost their seats and Republicans seized control of chambers in North Carolina, Louisiana and Virginia. Republicans picked up 17 state House seats, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Republicans view the strategy as a sign of larger problems for Obama's team in the Upper Midwest and Rust Belt, which Obama swept in 2008, and in Western states won by Obama, like Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico.

"He's in a world of hurt in the Great Lakes. There's no doubt about it. They're right to look for places that might offset that. But they don't have a happy hunting ground," said Ed Gillespie, a former Republican National Committee chairman. "They need to shore up the Southwest and Southeast ? Virginia and North Carolina ? in hopes of offsetting losses they're going to sustain in the Great Lakes."

Republicans have called the bus tour nothing more than an early jump on the 2012 campaign. "Going down there on the taxpayer's dime, calling it not a campaign event and then attacking Republicans is probably the worst overreach I've observed in the years that I've been in the Congress," Sen. John McCain of Arizona, Obama's 2008 Republican opponent, told reporters Tuesday.

Democratic presidential candidates have had trouble in the South since Carter swept his home region to win the White House in 1976. Bill Clinton won his home state of Arkansas, along with Louisiana and Tennessee during his two presidential campaigns ? he also carried Georgia in 1992 and Florida in 1996 ? but Al Gore and John Kerry both came up empty in the South.

In 2008, Obama blitzed North Carolina with millions of dollars of television ads, a large staff and an emphasis on early voting. He boosted turnout among black voters and took advantage of demographic shifts in the state, especially in a stretch from Charlotte to Raleigh along Interstate 85 where many retirees from northern states have moved.

In Virginia, Obama was helped by a strong turnout among young people, broad support from Hispanics and black voters and increases over Kerry's performance in every region of the state's western slice. The state is quickly becoming one of the nation's most competitive states in politics, with statewide campaigns typically won and lost in fast-growing areas outside the suburbs of Northern Virginia; in the region surrounding Richmond, the state's capital; and in the Virginia Beach area, which includes large pockets of black voters.

Dave Beattie, a Florida-based Democratic pollster who has worked on campaigns throughout the South, said Obama will need to maximize turnout among black and Hispanic voters, excite the Democratic base but also "show the voters in the middle that don't like politics that he's really working for them."

Obama will lavish more attention to the weeks ahead. Next month, he is paying homage to something many Tar Heels hold dear ? the University of North Carolina men's basketball team. The president plans to attend the Carrier Classic on the USS Carl Vinson in San Diego, where North Carolina will face Michigan State.

Learning The Look of Love: That Sly ?Come Hither? Stare

Series Intro

While it might not be witchcraft, the formula for ?love at first sight? remains a mystery. However, if you pop the following ingredients into a kettle: large pupils, long glances, and a lovely, attentive smile, you may not have concocted a bona fide love potion but your witch?s brew could contain some insight into the laws of attraction.

Being an optometrist and all around eye aficionado, I have a deep interest in the connection between the eyes and love. After reviewing many decades of literature and research, I have picked out a few studies that I think help us to understand how love affects our eyes and how our eyes can affect the level of attraction and love we feel for someone else. Let?s start off this ?Learning The Look of Love? series by first exploring love and eye contact.

Part One: That Sly ?Come Hither? Stare

Let?s pretend it?s Friday night, you?re in a bar and you are people watching. It?s dim in here but what do you see? You may see strangers exchanging glances with each other from across the crowded room. Once their eyes meet if eye contact is established and a look is held, the game of love has begun. A man peers around the room and becomes suddenly intrigued by a woman returning his glance. The glance turns into a gaze. He initially found her beautiful but now the magnetism of her prolonged eye contact has amplified her attractiveness.

Like the man in the bar, we do perceive people as more attractive when they are engaged in eye contact with us and when they shift their direction of gaze towards us as confirmed in experiments performed by Mason et al in 2005. This directed gaze apparently signals their interest and the fact that they find us interesting makes them even more appealing to us. In other words, if someone who you find attractive locks eyes with you, they automatically go up a notch on your love barometer.

Now, back to the bar. The male makes his way over to the female once good eye contact has been established and returned but what would have signaled him to come over even quicker? Perhaps along with the look of love, a smile would have reassured her interest in him.

Ben Jones and his team knew there must be more to it than just the eyes. The man in the bar feels a heightened amount of attraction for a woman who is looking at him and smiling at him. They did an experiment in 2006 demonstrating that when someone smiles while directing their interest and eye contact towards us, their attractiveness is boosted, more than someone who looks at us without smiling or when someone is smiling but not looking at us. Of interesting note, we also can find someone attractive if they are looking away from us and not smiling. I guess if your date or potential mate is directing a smile at anyone, it makes sense we?d like it most if that smile was directed towards us because it is that purposeful, attentive smile and stare that can spark the feeling of a connection between two people.

So the man and woman in the bar looked at each other and smiled. Now what? Initial attraction was there, fine, but could long glances really blossom into feelings of love?

Kellerman et al took 72 unacquainted, undergraduate students, split them into male-female pairs and then studied the effects that two minutes of uninterrupted mutual eye contact had on their feelings towards one another. In their study, they found that if the two strangers gazed into each others? eyes for those two minutes, they later reported they had increased feelings of passionate love and affection towards the other person. Another phase of the experiment had the pairs of students interact in other ways like looking at their partner?s hands or counting blinks of their partner but it was mutual eye contact that best fanned the flames of attraction. This suggests that long periods of eye contact can connect you to someone and even ignite feelings of love inside you for that person you have never previously met.

And for those already in love? Well, they look at each other more than average. Zick Rubin, a social psychologist, did a study on romantic love back in the 1970?s which is still frequently referenced. He came up with a scale that measured the degree to which two people were in love and the strength of their feelings for one another. He had college couples come in and each person filled out a survey asking them questions about their relationship. Then he left them alone saying that the next part of the experiment would start soon. Little did they know, it already had. By observing the amount of eye contact couples gave each other when left alone and comparing it with the level of love their surveys had measured, he found that people whose survey showed a stronger connection of love also held eye contact for longer periods of time than those who had a weaker connection of love.

Another way of looking at it? Let?s journey back to the bar one last time and turn our eyes towards the lovely couple seated at the table in front of us. They are not taking their eyes off each other, they look like they are in deep conversation and in their own little world. The waitress is treated as an unwanted interruption and burden. And this in fact just might be the case. According to Rubin, normally two people in conversation give each other eye contact anywhere from 30-60% of the time but couples who are in love look at each other 75% of the time during conversation and are slower to break their look away from each other when interrupted.

Now I am not saying the next time you are at a bar you should act like a pick up artist and look deeply into your potential mate?s eyes trying to hypnotize them into a love connection. There is a point where unrequited eye contact can go from flirty to just plain creepy. Also, when out for a romantic dinner you should not all of the sudden start staring down your spouse from across the table but a little more eye contact couldn?t hurt.

The complex magic of love can?t be boiled down to a wink, a nod and a grin but it is easy to see that the eyes have a lot to do with physical attraction, seduction and romantic love.

So, are the eyes really the windows to the soul? Perhaps we should say they are the windows to the heart.

Keep an eye out for Part Two in the series ?The Look of Love? on large pupils and love.
