Space truck heads skyward

Europe's ATV space freighter has blasted off from Kourou in French Guiana on a mission to resupply the International Space Station (ISS).

The ship will deliver food, water, air, fuel and spares to the high-flying astronaut outpost.

Its Ariane rocket left the ground at 01:34 local time (04:34 GMT), with the ascent to orbit due to take just over the hour.

  • Engine power: 4x 490-Newton thrusters; and 28x 220N thrusters
  • Capability: The ship finds and docks with the ISS autonomously
  • No re-use: The vehicle is destroyed with ISS rubbish at mission end
