Google unveils Nexus Seven -- its own tablet

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Google will sell a small tablet computer bearing its brand in a challenge to Amazon's Kindle Fire.

The Nexus 7 is designed specifically for Google Play, the online store that sells movies, music, books, apps and other content - the things Amazon.com Inc. also sells for its tablet computer.

Both tablets have screens that measure 7 inches diagonally, smaller than the nearly 10 inches on Apple Inc.'s popular iPad. The Nexus 7 will also be light - at about 0.75 pound, compared with the Kindle Fire's 0.9 pound. The iPad weighs 1.44 pounds.

The Nexus 7 will ship in mid-July starting at $199 - the same price as the Kindle Fire. By contrast, iPads start at $499. Customers can start ordering it through Google on Wednesday, initially in the U.S., Canada and Australia.

Andrew Rassweiler, an analyst with IHS iSuppli, said he suspects Google will be subsidizing the tablet to sell it starting at $199.

The Nexus 7 has more features than the Kindle, including a front-facing camera. The Kindle is believed to be roughly break even at that price. Samsung Electronics Co. sells a tablet similar to Google's for $250.

The Nexus 7 will run the next version of Google Inc.'s Android operating system, called Jelly Bean.

Google also announced a home entertainment device called Nexus Q. It sends content from your personal collection or YouTube to your existing TV and speaker systems. You control it through a separate Android phone or tablet.

The Nexus Q, which Google is calling the world's first "social streaming device," will available in July in the U.S. initially and sell for $299.

Google made the announcements during a keynote to open its annual conference in San Francisco for computer programmers.

Google also demonstrated its futuristic, Internet-connected glasses by having parachutists jump out of a blimp hovering about 7,000 feet above San Francisco. The audience got live video feeds from their glasses as they descended to land on the roof of the Moscone Center, the location of the conference.

Google is making prototypes of the device, known as Project Glass, available to test. They can only be purchased - for $1,500 - at the conference this week, for delivery early next year. Google is also giving all 6,000 attendees a Nexus 7, Nexus Q and Google Nexus phone for free.

At the event, Google provided an update on its Google Plus social network, which the company considers crucial to challenging Facebook Inc. for users and advertising. Google said the year-old social network now has 250 million, far smaller than Facebook's more than 900 million but larger than what Facebook had at the one-year mark.

Google said more people use Google Plus from mobile devices than traditional computers. On Wednesday, it introduced a Google Plus app for Android tablets and said one for the iPad is coming "very soon."

Google's expansion into the tablet market with the Nexus 7 brings another imposing entrant into what is already a battle of tech heavyweights. Last week, Microsoft Corp. announced its own tablet, Surface. Expected to go on sale this fall, Surface will run on a revamped version of Windows and compete directly with the iPad.

Although the tablet carries the Google brand, the machine will be made by AsusTek Computer Inc. Google also recently expanded into the device-making business with its $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility, but the company has stressed that it intends to continue to rely on Asus and other manufacturers that have embraced Android.

There are already other Android-powered tablets on the market, but none have proven nearly as popular as the iPad or Kindle Fire. That has raised worries at Google as more people rely on tablets to surf the Internet.

If Apple and Amazon establish themselves as the dominant tablet makers, they could set up their operating systems in ways that de-emphasize Google's Internet search engine and other services. Apple develops its own system, while Amazon modifies Android for use in Kindles.

Apple already has announced that the next version of the iPad operating system will abandon Google's digital maps as the built-in navigation system. That shift could cause neighborhood merchants to spend less money advertising on Google.

Earlier Wednesday, Google unveiled a new search tool to help you get the right information at the right time on your mobile device. Called Google Now, the tool will be part of Jelly Bean, which will be available in mid-July. Some devices, including the Galaxy Nexus, will get the upgrade automatically over the air.

With Google Now, if you say "traffic," for example, it will look at your usual commute to work and show you alternative routes if there's a lot of traffic. It will tell you the scores of your favorite sports teams automatically, and it will keep you up to date on flight statuses if you are flying somewhere. You'll have to activate Google Now to start using it.

Google Inc. said the Google Now feature will get smarter as you use it more.

The feature bears resemblance to the Siri virtual assistant on Apple's iPhone.

Jelly Bean will also come with the ability to share photos by tapping two phones together, using an emerging wireless technology called near-field communications.

Google said there are a million new Android devices activated daily, up from 400,000 a year ago. Google says there's particularly fast growth in emerging markets such as Brazil and India. Android is now the chief rival to the mobile software running Apple's iPhone and iPad.

Syrian rebels: 170 regime tanks mass near major city

ANTAKYA, Turkey - Syrian helicopter gunships reportedly?bombarded a strategic town in northern Syria overnight and tanks moved close to the commercial hub and its largest city Aleppo, rebel fighters said on Friday.?

Meanwhile, anti-regime groups reported what one called a "hideous massacre" in Douma, outside of Damascus, and distributed a video and photograph purportedly showing the aftermath of a killing that left more than 50 dead, including women and children. ?Journalists do not operate freely in Syria so there was no way of confirming the report.?

A senior rebel officer said around 170 Syrian tanks had assembled at an infantry school near the village of Musalmieh northeast of the city of Aleppo, just 19 miles from the Turkish border but were keeping?well clear of new Turkish air?defenses?installed to curb Syrian action near its frontiers.

"They're either preparing to move to the border to counter the Turkish deployment or attack the rebellious (Syrian) towns and villages in and around the border zone north of Aleppo," General Mustafa al-Sheikh, head of the Higher Military Council, a grouping of senior officers who defected from Assad's forces,?told Reuters by telephone from the border.?

Turkey sends military convoys toward Syrian border

Omar Abdallah, an activist in Idlib coordinating with the Free Syrian Army said: "After taking hits in rural Aleppo and Idlib, the army is re-grouping ... There is speculation that these forces intend to ring Aleppo starting July 1."?

Turkish commanders inspected the missile batteries deployed on the border region on Thursday following Syria's shooting down of a Turkish warplane a week ago, which has sharply raised tensions between the two nations.?

Massacre?
Meantime, Syrians in the besieged city of Douma wrapped mangled and bloodied corpses in white burial shrouds early on Friday, according to video posted online.

"A massacre has been committed in the city of Douma, killing more than 50 in this bloody day, where Assad mafias and death squads launch aggressive attacks, bombardment of the city, and executions," U.S.-based anti-Assad Syrian Expatriates said a statement.?

A bomb targeting Syria's highest court has exploded in Damascus. NBC's Bill Neely reports.

Douma is predominantly Sunni community that has become as a focus of resistance to the Assad government.

The group gave details for the killings of 10 members of the same family, including four chidren, their mothers and grandmother. ?More than 200 were wounded, the group said.?

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 190 people, including 125 civilians, were killed on Thursday throughout the country.

The United States, Britain and France have said that Assad is responsible for the violence, which the United Nations estimates has killed at least 10,000 people, and is no longer fit to govern. Russia and China, however, reject what they describe as Western calls for "regime change."?

A strong explosion rocked the Syrian capital near a busy market and the Palace of Justice. Msnbc.com's Richard Lui reports.

Turkish deployments?
The Turkish deployments, a graphic warning to President Bashar al-Assad, coincide with rising violence across Syria and increasingly urgent international efforts to forge a peace deal as the nation slips into full-blown war.?

As the Turkish-Syrian dimension ratcheted up further pressure, peace envoy Kofi Annan said on Friday he was "optimistic" that crisis talks in Geneva on Saturday would produce an acceptable outcome, which has so far proved elusive.?

Turkey to help 'liberate the Syrians from dictatorship'

Regional analysts said that while neither Turkey nor its NATO allies appeared to have any appetite to enforce a formal no-fly zone over Syrian territory, Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan had made it clear Assad would be risking what he called the 'wrath' of Turkey if its aircraft strayed close to its borders.?

Recently, there were clashes close to the border between Syrian forces and rebels. Last weekend, Damascus said "terrorists" infiltrating from Turkey were killed and there have been reports of Syrian forces shooting into camps for refugees in Turkey.?

Turkey, sheltering some 34,000 Syrian refugees and providing bases for the rebel Free Syria Army (FSA), is in the forefront of the efforts to bring down Assad.?

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told his newly appointed cabinet that a real "state of war" exists in the country and directed them to direct all its efforts toward vanquishing the uprising against him. ITV's Bill Neely reports.

Syrian tanks mass?
Rebel sources in Turkey's Hatay region said Assad's helicopters attacked Saraqeb, a strategic town deep in Idlib province, but kept away from the area directly along the Turkish border in the rural regions of Idlib and Aleppo provinces.?

Neither Turkey, which fears a local clash escalating into a regional sectarian conflagration, nor Syria, has any interest in a confrontation on their shared border.?

Ankara, which has the second biggest army in NATO, called an emergency NATO meeting after its warplane was shot down.?

Turkey has in the past talked about creating a humanitarian corridor on Syrian territory if refugee flows became dangerously unmanageable or the scale of killing in Syria became intolerable. But it had always said this would require international endorsement.?

"NATO just doesn't look like it's in the mood," David Hartwell, Middle East analyst, IHS Jane's, said. "What you might get is the Turks forcing a de facto no-fly zone."?

Erdogan announced earlier this week that he had issued new rules of engagement to his border troops and said any Syrian military elements approaching Turkish borders and deemed a threat would be treated as a target. But he failed, perhaps deliberately, to specify how close Syrian forces could come to the border before becoming vulnerable.?

"The Syrians might accept a very narrow zone along the border. Syria will remain very reluctant to get involved in any conflict with Turkey. They would be up against a very serious military foe," Malcolm Chalmers, research director at Britain's Royal United Services Institute, said.?

The world has been accused by Syrian opposition activists of inertia over the bloodshed. Diplomacy has failed to produce agreement between Western powers, backing the opposition, and Russia, which has used its U.N. veto to block Western and Sunni Arab moves to drive Assad from power.?

Affordable Care Act upheld ? Washington now ahead of most states | Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler

Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler expressed great relief with the U.S. Supreme Court?s decision upholding the Affordable Care Act and said Washington state is now well ahead of most states in reforming its health care system.

Many reforms are currently in place, but key benefits and programs take effect in 2014, including Washington?s new Health Exchange, federal subsidies to help 477,000 people afford health insurance, an expansion of Medicaid for 328,000 poor childless adults and the ban on insurance companies from denying people coverage if they?re sick.

?I?m very pleased the Supreme Court chose to uphold the Affordable Care Act,? said Kreidler. ?We?ve been busy for two years now implementing the reforms and have made great progress, but there?s a lot left to do before 2014. With the court decision out of the way, we can continue our focus on where it should be ? bringing relief to families struggling to find quality, affordable health insurance.?

The millions of Washington state consumers benefitting from the Affordable Care Act?s early reforms include:

More than 2.4 million people who no longer face lifetime caps on their health benefits.
More than 52,000 young adults up to age 26 who have stayed on their parents? health plans.
More than 1.2 million people who now have coverage for preventive care with no co-pays or deductibles.
More than 60,000 people in Medicare who have saved hundreds on their prescription drugs.

Washington state also leveraged millions in federal funds available under the Affordable Care Act to create:

?The Affordable Care Act is not perfect, but it moves us in the right direction and is the only meaningful reform that?s passed in decades,? said Kreidler. ?The debate was clearly contentious, and I?m grateful to have it behind us. But, now it?s time to focus on the work ahead ? more than a million uninsured people in our state are counting on us.?

Implementation of WHO India Country Cooperation Strategy to Improve Health and Equity in India

New Delhi (ABC Live) Paving the way for a strategic partnership aimed at unleashing the role of India in the global health scene with the continued pursuit of health improvement in the country, the Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare Mr.? Ghulam Nabi Azad today launched WHO?s new Country Cooperation Strategy with India (2012-17). ?

Speaking on the occasion, Mr.? Azad said, ?In the context of the opportunities and challenges that we face, the well being of Indian citizens will depend on a number of strategic choices related to health and equity, that must be made in the next few years. Not only our health, but our children?s health too depends on these strategic choices and the collaborations between the critical constituents of our health system?.

?Mr.? Azad congratulated both the ministry officials and WHO?s entire team led by Dr Nata Menabde, who were behind the development of the document and exhorted upon all concerned to work towards realization of the objectives set out in this document. ?We are sure that implementing the strategy will make India healthier and more equitable,? he added.

Reflecting the shared vision of the two partners, it is for the first time that the Country Cooperation Strategy (CCS) has been developed jointly by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India and the WHO Country Office for India (WCO). To contribute meaningfully to the national health policy and government?s health agenda, the CCS has identified three strategic priorities and the key focus areas under each priority:

Supporting an improved role of the Government of India in global health

International Health Regulations: Ensuring the implementation of International Health Regulations and similar commitments

Pharmaceuticals: Strengthening the pharmaceutical sector including drug regulatory capacity and, trade and health

Stewardship: Improving the stewardship capacity of the entire Indian health system

Promoting access to and utilization of affordable, efficiently networked and sustainable quality services by the entire population

Financial Protection: Providing universal health service coverage so that every individual would achieve health gain from a health intervention when needed

Quality: Properly accrediting service delivery institutions (primary health care facilities and hospitals) to deliver the agreed service package

Helping to confront the new epidemiological reality of India

Health of Mothers and Children: Scaling up reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health services

Combined Morbidity: Addressing increased combinations of communicable and non-communicable diseases

Transitioning Services: Gradual, phased ?transfer strategy? of WHO services to the national, state and local authorities without erosion of effectiveness during the transition period

Outlining the strategic framework, Secretary, MoHFW?? Mr.? P K Pradhan said, ?We hope this strategy will facilitate joint action with the stakeholders concerned ? national as well as international, public and private ? for improving health and equity in India while fostering our contribution to global health. We see the CCS as a guide for partnership, planning, budgeting, and resource allocation,? he added.

In her message, Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General, WHO said, ?This Country Cooperation Strategy is our contribution towards health progress in this extraordinary country. We are convinced, India will continue improving the health of its people and this will have a global impact.?

Incorporating valuable recommendations of key stakeholders, the CCS balances country priorities with WHO?s strategic orientation of contributing optimally to national health development.? Elaborating on the theme, Dr Nata Menabde, WHO Representative to India, said, ?In the CCS we have agreed on a number of inter-sectoral actions on the broad determinants of health as well as necessary health system reforms for providing better services to individuals and communities, and jointly achieving greater health impact.?

?Closely aligned to ongoing WHO reforms globally, this new CCS will also mark a transition on how WHO plans, works, organizes itself and delivers measurable results towards ensuring better health for all Indians in collaboration with the Government and other partners,? she added.

The CCS will be implemented on the basis of two-year Action Plans? developed by the WCO in consultation with the MoHFW taking due consideration of the health priorities envisaged? by the 12th Five Year Plan.

iPhone 5 to be 2013 Top Smartphone - Analyst

An analyst boldly said that the upcoming iPhone 5 will be the leading smartphone next year.

iPhone just turned? five years old. In a span of five years, iPhone brought $150 billion to Apple making it the top and most profitable tech company.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE:JPM) analyst Mark Moskowitz said that when iPhone 5made its debut this fall with the increase in production throughout the fourth quarter as well as offering support for 4G LTE and other upgrades, the iPhone 5 will make a big splash this year, ensuring its dominance into 2013.

"We think that a combination of revolutionary hardware enhancements and software-driven services (i.e., Passbook, Maps, FaceTime over cellular) stand to reaffirm the iPhone as the leading smartphone in 2013," Moskowitz wrote in the investors' note.

However, Moskowitz also said that the company may also face macroeconomic challenges around the second quarter. The analyst claimed that hardware companies like Apple may also face tough times next year. ?Apple lowered its projections on the third quarter. This is not unusual before the quarter when a new model will be released.

Mark Moskowitz anticipated that the iPhone is Apple's strongest product and it will boost its sales on the fourth quarter. He also said that the Cupertino-based company should rely more on iPhone if J.P. Morgan's lower sales expectations for iPad and Mac proved to be true.

"Overall, our expectation of stronger iPhone unit sales and the related mix benefits partially counters our lower growth assumptions for the iPad and Mac businesses," Moskowitz added.

A lot of rumors surround iPhone 5 possible features including larger screen display, smaller dock connector, 4G/LTE and NFC support. iPhone 5 is speculated to be released in September or October along with Apple's upgraded mobile software, iOS 6. ?Apple is mum about the details of the upcoming iOS device.

iPhone celebrates its fifth anniversary. The first iPhone made its debut on June 29, 2007 and shipped 250 million handsets worldwide and generated $150 billion worth of revenue for Apple.

When Apple first introduced iPhone, there were several doubts if it will be a hit in the market. The doubts were proven irrelevant as iPhone sells more handsets in a day compared to number of babies born.?

Federal authorities used X-ray machines, K-9 units and officers to search more than 160 of the 2,000 containers aboard the 850-foot Ville D'Aquarius at Port Newark, one of the nation's busiest ports.

When the vessel arrived from the Mideast early Wednesday, it was met by law enforcement officials and more than a dozen ambulances. Large mechanical cranes began unloading containers from the ship.

The source of the noise remained a mystery.

"After a lengthy and exhaustive inspection by Department of Homeland Security officials, the search forstowaways?aboard the Ville D'Aquarius has concluded with no?stowaways?found," the department said in a statement Thursday morning following a search that lasted through the night.

A Coast Guard team had boarded the ship outside New York Harbor early Wednesday as the ship prepared to dock, spokesman Charles Rowe said. The officers were knocking on a bulkhead, or partition, of the ship as a routine security check and heard knocks back, he said, but they couldn't pinpoint the source of the sound. The return knocks ended after about two hours, Rowe said.

The team followed protocol and didn't open containers at sea in order to control the situation, he said.

The steel shipping containers are usually 8 feet wide and 8- to 10-feet high and either 20- or 40-feet long, designed to withstand the rigors of the high seas and are strong enough to be stacked several high.

They normally can be opened only from the outside. There's hardly any ventilation.

"The routing of the ship and the ports of call was what led to the actions," McLees said.

Michael Ward, the FBI's top official in New Jersey, said the response was appropriate given the port's vulnerability. The area is considered a prime potential target for terrorists.

"You're going to get a response like this any time you have these types of facts," Ward said. "It was an appropriate response which we did out of an abundance of caution."

The recent review of business-university collaboration led by Prof Tim Wilson recommends that every full-time undergraduate student should have the opportunity to experience a structured, university-approved, undergraduate internship during their study. Furthermore, university careers services and their local enterprise partnership (LEP) should collaborate to establish a "skills supply chain" between universities and local businesses, integrating placements, internships and employment services. Many university career services are already engaged in this work; it is the apparent unevenness of the provision across the higher education landscape that has prompted the recommendations.
Unevenness reflects diversity. To pursue the chain analogy there are many types and lengths of chain (as any jeweller will tell you): there are short placements that may be integral to the course; there are sandwich placements, so called because they take up to a year working in business between years of the course; and there are graduate internships, which may be progressed to after completion of the degree. Each has a different educational purpose and impact on the satisfaction of employers' need for skilled employees.
The activities undertaken also depend on the nature and length of the chain. For example, short placements are ideal for finding out about occupations, exploring aptitudes and checking career goals; longer placements are arguably better for developing work-related competencies in situ and conducting course or employer-devised projects that may make a direct contribution to business growth. One recent example I heard of is a student on placement from university who saw a way to save the business several million pounds. He was offered a job.
Career services' contribution to the design of the supply chain may be more analogous to engineering than jewellery-making as weighty issues of purpose, aims, length, activities, and relationship to the course and so on, surface; and then there is also how to ensure that students' employability is enhanced by it. But what really makes a placement or internship (these terms are often used interchangeably) work well? Wilson et al, suggest structure is key and this follows from defining the purpose. Others have suggested that internships work best when there is genuine motivation from both sides, when the placement provides real (not synthesised) learning opportunities and experiences, when it challenges and relates to long-term job or business aspirations.
We need students and graduates to be stretched and employers to understand their potential but when this happens very real concerns arise about job substitution? especially on longer placements. Also, one student's stretch is another student's yawn; one employer's view of what constitutes talent may be written off as simply average by another. Diversity again. There are some tensions pulling at that chain.
Universities and their career services have been working at the interface between higher education and employment longer than anyone can remember. Grown out of industrial histories, many university courses respond to local or regional demand for skilled workforces; at the leading edge of research and development universities are in active collaboration with local, national and international businesses. But every year there are new students and new businesses, new technologies and new economic challenges. Change, as anyone who worked in Lehman Bros will tell you, happens. Career services need to work with enormous diversity on both the supply and demand ends of the chain ? it is perhaps unsurprising that occasionally a link breaks.
The reality is that university career services are often tasked with maintaining relationships with businesses and play a pivotal role in ensuring high quality student (and graduate) work experiences by identifying students' and employers' aspirations, working with tutors devising and assessing work-related projects/learning, providing formal accreditation of workplace learning, supporting entrepreneurialism in students and graduates, working to provide incubator arrangements for new businesses, preparing and debriefing students to optimise employability learning, advising on employment rights, helping students articulate their skills, and supporting students to integrate the work- and course-based aspects of their courses.

The fifth anniversary of the iPhone is coming up this week and what a five years it has been.

Apple has shipped 250 million iPhones worldwide since the product launched back in 2007, according to new data from Strategy Analytics, a global research firm.

While the first five years have been good for the iPhone, Strategy Analytics suggests the next five could prove to be more challenging as carriers rethink the cost of subsidizing the phone and Apple faces greater competition from companies like Samsung.

That said, there's still plenty of opportunity for growth. Apple is looking to expand into new markets abroad, perhaps most notably by partnering with China Mobile, a wireless carrier with more than 650 million subscribers. And Apple is expanding into new markets at home by finally making the iPhone available on the prepaid market.
