(AP) ? President Barack Obama met privately Saturday with the family of Nelson Mandela.

The meeting was held in Johannesburg at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, part of the former South African president's foundation.

It lasted for about a half hour, enough time for a small crowd to gather outside for Obama's departure.

The White House says Obama met with two of Mandela's daughters and several grandchildren.

He will not meet with the ailing 94-year-old Mandela, who is hospitalized with a lung infection. The White House says the decision was made in accordance with the wishes of Mandela's family.

The White House initially said first lady Michelle Obama would attend, but later said she did not accompany the president. Mrs. Obama met Mandela during her trip to Africa in 2011.

Recession hit aviation industry hard, taking 11,000 Wichita jobs

A pending closure at Boeing Wichita, a deep downturn in the general aviation industry and a bankruptcy have cost Wichita thousands of jobs since the end of 2008.

At the same time, new programs at Bombardier Learjet and at Spirit AeroSystems, along with strong commercial aircraft orders, have boosted employment at those two companies.

The economic downturn that hit the nation and the state in late 2007 delivered an especially hard punch to Wichita. The recession came after three years of record deliveries by general aviation planemakers, and the order books were bulging at Cessna Aircraft, Hawker Beechcraft and Bombardier Learjet.

As the bad economics news rolled in, customers canceled orders and the planemakers cut back production and employment to match.

At the same time, companies are doing more with fewer people. They also have moved work outside their companies, including to local suppliers and to Mexico.

Local suppliers to the industry also cut jobs in the downturn as orders for parts and assemblies fell to match. Today, they report they?re busy as demand for the robust commercial aviation market continues to increase. Boeing and Airbus, for example, are boosting airliner production.

Overall, however, total employment at Wichita?s five largest aviation manufacturers hasn?t returned to pre-recession figures.

Today, the companies combined employ about 24,700 people, down nearly 11,000 employees, or 31 percent, from the end of 2008.

Overall, aerospace employment in the Wichita metro area, including suppliers, totaled about 46,400 during the late 1990s. In 2004, that number had fallen to 31,600 before climbing to 41,500 in 2008.

But by mid-2011, employment had fallen to 29,900.

Today, employment in the sector totals 30,300.

Beechcraft

Hawker Beechcraft emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February as a smaller, restructured company called Beechcraft Corp. Today, it focuses on its piston, turboprop, military and after-market business.

The company exited its unprofitable business jet production during the restructuring, a move that meant a loss of about 1,100 jobs over the past year. During the downturn in the business jet market, the company cut jobs to match lower demand. In November 2008, Hawker announced the first of the job cuts, saying it would lay off 500 people as the market started to decline. Layoffs continued in 2009. At the end of 2008, the company employed 7,500 people. Today, it employs roughly 3,500. The market remains difficult. And while the past few years have been tough, officials say the company has emerged from bankruptcy well positioned for the future.

Boeing Wichita

In January 2012, the community was rocked by the news that after 85 years in Wichita, Boeing had decided to close its local facility, which focuses on military work.

Programs had matured, had come to a close or were winding down with not enough business on the horizon to replace them. Since then, some employees have taken jobs with Boeing in Oklahoma City, San Antonio and Puget Sound. Others have retired. About 470 employees were laid off in 2012, followed by about 300 layoffs so far this year. The facility is scheduled to close in early 2014. In late 2008, Boeing employed about 3,000 people. In early 2012, employment was down to 2,160. Today, it employs about 1,000. Boeing notes that it will continue to have a significant presence in the city, where it is Spirit AeroSystems? largest customer.

Bombardier Learjet

At Bombardier Learjet, employment is up from five years ago after falling during the downturn. That?s largely because of the new Learjet 85, Learjet 70 and Learjet 75 programs in development ? plus an expansion of its busy Wichita flight test center. The flight test center tests all Bombardier aircraft, including Bombardier planes built in Canada. At the end of 2008, the facility employed 2,676, including contractors. Today, that figure totals 3,417.

Cessna Aircraft

Before the downturn, Cessna Aircraft deliveries were setting records, and the company was adding employees and boosting production to meet demand. At the end of 2008, Cessna employed about 12,000 people in Wichita. In November of that year, Cessna announced the first of the job cuts, saying it would cut 665 jobs as the downturn began. In January 2009, Cessna announced the need to shed another 4,000 jobs. Today, employment is about half of what it was five years ago. The market remains difficult. This year, Cessna recalled about 100 hourly workers, but in April it offered early retirement packages to employees and laid off others. It now employs 5,664.

Spirit AeroSystems

At the end of 2008, Spirit AeroSystems, the city?s largest private employer, employed 10,400 people in Wichita. Today, that figure has increased to 11,100. That?s because the company has taken on new development programs and because Boeing continues to raise production rates on its airliners. Spirit builds parts of all Boeing commercial airplanes in Wichita, including the entire fuselage of the popular 737 single-aisle plane. Demand is robust as airlines replace older aircraft and add more fuel-efficient planes.

(AP) ? The first week of George Zimmerman's second-degree murder trial wrapped up with testimony from two neighbors and a police officer that seemed to bolster the defense's argument that he was pinned on his back by Trayvon Martin before shooting the teen.

Neighbor Jonathan Good testified Friday that it appeared the unarmed teen was straddling the neighborhood watch volunteer, while another neighbor, Jonathan Manalo, said Zimmerman seemed credible when he said just after the fight that he shot Martin in self-defense. Officer Tim Smith testified that Zimmerman's back side was covered in grass and wetter than his front side.

All three were called as witnesses for prosecutors who are trying to convict him of second-degree murder.

Good, who had perhaps the best view of any witness, said he did not see anyone's head being slammed into the concrete sidewalk, as Zimmerman claims Martin did to him. Good initially testified that it appeared "there were strikes being thrown, punches being thrown," but during detailed questioning he said he saw only "downward" arm movements being made.

Zimmerman has claimed that he fatally shot 17-year-old Martin in February 2012 in self-defense as the Miami-area teen was banging his head into the concrete sidewalk behind the townhomes in a gated community.

Under prosecution questioning, Good said he never saw anyone being attacked that way. Good said he heard a noise behind his townhome and he saw what looked like a tussle when he stepped out onto his patio. He said he yelled: "What's going on? Stop it."

Good testified he saw a person in black clothing on top of another person with "white or red" clothing. He said he couldn't see faces but it looked like the person on the bottom had lighter skin. Martin was black and was wearing a dark hoodie. Zimmerman identifies as Hispanic and was wearing a red jacket. Good was back inside calling 911 when he heard a gunshot.

"It looked like there were strikes being thrown, punches being thrown," Good said.

Later, under cross-examination, he said that it looked like the person on top was straddling the person on bottom in a mixed-martial arts move known as "ground and pound." When defense attorney Mark O'Mara asked him if the person on top was Martin, Good said, "Correct, that's what it looked like." Good also said the person on the bottom yelled for help.

Zimmerman, 29, could get life in prison if convicted of second-degree murder. Zimmerman followed Martin in his truck and called a police dispatch number before he and the teen got into a fight.

Zimmerman has denied the confrontation had anything to do with race, as Martin's family and their supporters have claimed.

Manalo, whose wife had testified earlier in the week, was the first neighbor to step outside and see what happened with his flashlight after he heard a gunshot. He took cellphone photos of a bloodied Zimmerman and Martin's body, and those photos were shown to jurors on Friday. Manalo also described Martin's hands as being under his body.

Manalo said Zimmerman didn't appear shocked and acted calmly. After police officers arrived and handcuffed Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer asked Manalo to call his wife and tell her what happened.

Manalo started to tell Zimmerman's wife that her husband had been involved in a shooting and was being questioned by police when "he cut me off and said, 'Just tell her I shot someone,'" Manalo said.

Under cross-examination, Manalo said when he asked Zimmerman what happened, the neighborhood watch volunteer told him, "I was defending myself and I shot him."

"From what you could tell at that moment, that seemed completely true?" asked defense attorney Don West.

"Yes," Manalo said.

Smith, the police officer, testified that when he saw Zimmerman after the shooting, the neighborhood watch volunteer's backside was covered in grass and wetter than his front side, bolstering defense attorneys' contention that Martin was on top of Zimmerman.

As he walked to the squad car after he had been handcuffed, Zimmerman told the officer that "he was yelling for help and nobody would come help him," Smith said.

"It was almost a defeated ... a confused look on his face," Smith said.

Smith said Zimmerman described himself as "lightheaded" during the drive to Sanford Police Station but declined an offer to take him to a hospital.

The physician's assistant who treated Zimmerman the next day said that Zimmerman complained of feeling nauseated upon reflecting what had happened. But Lindzee Folgate attributed that to psychological factors rather than any physical condition. She also said it appeared his nose was broken, but it was impossible to say for sure since no X-rays were taken. She recommended he see an ear-and-nose doctor and a psychologist.

When O'Mara asked if abrasions on his head were consistent with someone who had his had slammed into concrete, Folgate said, "it could be consistent, yes."

She also testified that Zimmerman had written on a form reciting his medical history that he was exercising three times a week by doing mixed martial arts, a statement that prosecutor Bernie de la Rionda asked her to repeat.

Paramedic Stacy Livingston, who responded to the shooting scene, testified Zimmerman had a swollen, bleeding nose and two cuts on the back of his head an inch long. When O'Mara asked if Zimmerman should have been concerned with his medical well-being because of his injuries, Livingston said, "Possibly."

When photos of Martin's body were shown on a courtroom projector during Livingston's testimony, Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, looked away and blinked back tears.

Ritalin for Cocaine Addiction? | Psych Central News

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on June 28, 2013

Ritalin for Cocaine Addiction? New research suggests a single dose of methylphenidate (brand name Ritalin) can help to improve brain function in cocaine addiction, which ultimately could make it an add-on treatment for such addictions.

Researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York performed imaging studies to develop their hypothesis. They found that the drug modified connectivity in certain brain circuits that underlie self-control and craving among cocaine-addicted individuals.

The research is published in the current issue of JAMA Psychiatry.

Previous research has shown that oral methylphenidate improved brain function in cocaine users performing specific cognitive tasks such as ignoring emotionally distracting words and resolving a cognitive conflict.

Similar to cocaine, methylphenidate increases dopamine (and norepinephrine) activity in the brain, but, administered orally, takes longer to reach peak effect, giving it a lower potential for abuse.

By extending dopamine?s action, the drug enhances signaling to improve several cognitive functions, including information processing and attention.

?Orally administered methylphenidate increases dopamine in the brain, similar to cocaine, but without the strong addictive properties,? said Rita Goldstein, Ph.D., who led the research while at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in New York.

?We wanted to determine whether such substitutive properties, which are helpful in other replacement therapies such as using nicotine gum instead of smoking cigarettes or methadone instead of heroin, would play a role in enhancing brain connectivity between regions of potential importance for intervention in cocaine addiction.?

Anna Konova, a doctoral candidate at Stony Brook University, who was first author on this manuscript, added, ?Using fMRI, we found that methylphenidate did indeed have a beneficial impact on the connectivity between several brain centers associated with addiction.?

For the study,?Goldstein and her team recruited 18 cocaine-addicted individuals. Participants were then randomized to receive an oral dose of methylphenidate or placebo.

The researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure the strength of connectivity in particular brain circuits known to play a role in addiction before and during peak drug effects. They also assessed each subject?s severity of addiction to see if this had any bearing on the results.

Methylphenidate decreased connectivity between areas of the brain that have been strongly implicated in the formation of habits, including compulsive drug seeking and craving.

The scans also showed that methylphenidate strengthened connectivity between several brain regions involved in regulating emotions and exerting control over behaviors?connections previously reported to be disrupted in cocaine addiction.

?The benefits of methylphenidate were present after only one dose, indicating that this drug has significant potential as a treatment add-on for addiction to cocaine and possibly other stimulants,? said?Goldstein.

?This is a preliminary study, but the findings are exciting and warrant further exploration, particularly in conjunction with cognitive behavioral therapy or cognitive remediation.?

Using manufacturer branding to advertise a product? - UK Business ...

We were in talks with a manufacturer about taking their product and doing something quite unique that if it worked would make a lot of money for them, us and the sole UK distributors.

They have gone quiet on it and arent doing what they needed to do, however we are considering taking the idea forward without their direct input, but with the full support of the distributor.

Now, are we allowed or more to the point will we get in trouble for using their products branding to advertise and promote their product. We're not pretending to be them, just want to use a coherant and unified product appearance from how we sell it through to what the customer receives. As far as we know they dont own any trademarks for the names/product.

EDIT: Just checked trademark again, he has applied (yesterday) for a TM on the name...???

How to Meet an Online Friend in Real Life Without It Being Awkward

You're not looking to bang every person you meet online. Sometimes, you're just looking for friends. But somehow, meeting someone you know online platonically has become a far more awkward endeavor than a random OKCupid date. You know her but you dont know her. Do you shake hands? Do you hug? Do you do that open-palmed half-wave? God forbid she goes for the hug and you go for the handshake like you're in some jerking, uncoordinated, chest-poking dance.

Jackson's teenage son describes upbringing, death

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Michael Jackson's oldest son described the frantic efforts to revive his father to a jury, a scene of tears and agony that ended a dozen idyllic years being raised by one of pop music's superstars.

Michael Joseph "Prince" Jackson Jr. told the panel Wednesday how he knew there was trouble in the singer's rented mansion when heard screaming upstairs and went into his father's bedroom. His father was laying halfway off the bed, eyes rolled up into the back of his head as his physician tried CPR.

His sister Paris screamed for her father and Prince, now 16, told jurors that he was crying. On the ride to a hospital, the teenager recounted how he tried to calm the fears of his sister and younger brother by telling them that angels were watching over their father and everything would be fine.

It wasn't until his father's doctor, Conrad Murray, came out of the emergency room and said he had died that Prince knew his father was gone.

"Nothing will ever be the same," the teenager told jurors. He said while his younger brother doesn't totally realize the loss, his sister has had the hardest time of them all and he has had many sleepless nights since his father died four years ago.

His voice wavered at times and tears appeared to form in his eyes, but Prince remained composed as he publicly recounted for the first time what he saw the day his father died.

The re-telling of the scene in Jackson's bedroom came after nearly an hour of Prince describing happier times, showing photos of him and his sister when they were younger and a series of videos of the children filmed by their father.

He testified in a lawsuit accusing concert promoter AEG Live LLC of negligently hiring Murray, who was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter for giving Jackson an overdose of the anesthetic propofol.

AEG denies it hired the physician or bears any responsibility for the entertainer's death.

Wearing a black suit with a dark grey tie and his long brown hair tucked behind his ears, Prince testified that he saw AEG Live CEO Randy Phillips at the family's rented mansion in a heated conversation with Murray in the days before his father died. The teenager said Phillips grabbed Murray's elbow.

Phillips "looked aggressive to me," Prince testified.

His father wasn't at home at the time and was probably rehearsing, he said.

He said he saw his father cry after phone conversations with Phillips, and wanted more time to rehearse and was unhappy with pressure to perform his 50 scheduled comeback concerts titled "This Is It."

Murray's attorney Valerie Wass and AEG defense attorney Marvin S. Putnam later denied outside court that the meeting Prince described ever happened.

Putnam said Prince would be re-called to the witness stand during the defense case later in the trial.

"I think as the testimony will show when he is called in our defense that's not what happened," Putnam said. "He was a 12-year-old boy who has had to endure this great tragedy."

The testimony began with the teenager showing jurors roughly 15 minutes of private family photos and home videos.

He described growing up on Neverland Ranch and narrated videos of the property's petting zoos, amusement park and other amenities. After his father's acquittal of child molestation charges, Prince described living in the Middle East, Ireland and Las Vegas.

Prince is the first Jackson family member to testify during the trial, now in its ninth week. On Thursday his cousins, TJ and Taj Jackson, who are Tito Jackson's sons, will take the witness stand.

Prince Jackson, his sister Paris-Michael Katherine Jackson and brother Prince Michael "Blanket" Jackson are plaintiffs in the case against AEG, which their grandmother and primary caretaker filed in August 2010.

Another image showed Michael Jackson playing piano with his son while Prince was still a toddler.

Plaintiffs' attorney Brian Panish asked Prince whether he was interested in pursuing a career in music. "I can never play an instrument and I definitely cannot sing," Prince said to laughter from the jury.

He said he wanted to study film or business when he goes to college.

His testimony also included details that AEG's lawyers will likely point to later in the case to bolster their contention that Jackson was secretive about using propofol as a sleep aid.

Prince said none of the household staff were allowed upstairs at the mansion, and the singer kept his bedroom locked while receiving treatments from Murray.

During cross-examination, Putnam played a clip from a deposition of Prince in which the teen said he discovered the bedroom was locked when he and his siblings were playing hide-and-seek and couldn't get inside.

Prince also said his father gave him and his sister Paris a stack of $100 bills on a few occasions to give to Murray. He said his father told him that Murray wouldn't take the money from him, and the doctor wouldn't take the full amount from the children.

The teenager said his understanding was that the money was meant to tide Murray over until he got paid by AEG Live.

He never saw or knew how Murray was treating his doctor.

"I was 12. To my understanding he was supposed to make sure my dad stayed healthy," Prince testified.

StickNFind Bluetooth stickers let you tag and locate your goods with a smartphone handson video

When StickNFind burst onto the scene at the start of the year, the company promised that an SDK wouldn't be too far behind. The software's now available on the StickNFind website, while interested parties can dip their head below the break to learn a little more.

Hartford selling UK variable annuity business

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ? Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. is buying The Hartford's British variable annuity business for about $285 million.

Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. announced in March that it was exiting the annuity business so that it can focus on its property and casualty insurance, group benefits and mutual funds.

Hartford CFO Christopher Swift said in a statement Thursday that the sale of Hartford Life International Ltd. to Berkshire's Columbia Insurance Co. will help reduce the size and risk related to some legacy variable annuities, .

The acquisition is expected to result in a second-quarter net loss of about $110 million, Hartford said.

The deal is targeted to close by year's end.

Berkshire's Oriental Trading Co. also announced Thursday that it is buying toy maker MindWare Holdings Inc. for an undisclosed amount.

Twitter #Music for iOS adds genres for more targeted filtering, thankfully omits rap-rock

Twitter #Music for iOS adds Genres, because raprock should standalone

Twitter's still tweaking its #Music app for iOS, currently the only mobile platform that's privy to the discovery service. Previously, users could only toggle through four categories (i.e., Popular, Emerging, Suggested and #NowPlaying) to stumble upon artists and tracks of interest. But as of today, Twitter's updating the app's filter, adding genres, like Metal, Country, Dance and all the predictably labeled rest to Charts so you can "get hip-hoppy" (it's in the changelog) or get your Bieb on or make jazz hands to the sounds of that Rihanna. The new version 1.1 update also lets users now authenticate Rdio from within the app -- no more linking out to Safari -- and irons out some known bugs, too. If you've already downloaded the app, then just sit back and wait for it to update. First timers can head to the source below for to test out the Twitter-made music assist.

Microsoft follows Google's lead, files request to reveal more data about FISA orders

Microsoft follows Google's lead, files to reveal more data about FISA requests

The Wall Street Journal reports that in a move similar to Google's request last week, Microsoft has submitted a motion to the secret FISA court to authorize the release of "aggregate data" about the requests it has received. Microsoft published the information it has so far been authorized to reveal a couple of weeks ago, lumping in national security related requests with stats for other criminal warrants and subpoenas. Google and Twitter have been among the loudest requesting the ability to separate national security-related requests like those at the center of the PRISM controversy, however it's been reported that several companies are negotiating for the ability to be more specific.

Pokki, Zynga and Acer partner to offer arcade preloaded on new PCs

Pokki, Zynga and Acer partner to offer arcade preloaded on new PCs

2013-06-24_16h18_58-730x498

Despite the industry shift from desktop gaming to mobile platforms, Zynga is still trying to reach players on computer platforms. The social gaming company has begun a partnership with?SweetLabs, developers of free arcade platform Pokki and computer?manufacturer?Acer. The Pokki gaming platform will come preloaded on Acer PCs with all of Zynga?s desktop games available to download.

SweetLabs has a history of bringing popular mobile apps to desktop with versions of Angry Birds and Pandora. This Zynga partnership displays its prowess for bringing authentic tablet experiences to desktop games. The Pokki arcade also provides the opportunity to easily access and install games like on a mobile device.

By partnering with Pokki, Zynga is trying to use the relationship as another distribution channel for its games. With unimpressive stock price and falling revenue, the company is looking for more solutions to stop the bleeding. Since Zynga.com has not been an extension of Facebook since November 2012, adopting another arcade provides more chance for more users. New players on the Pokki platform are not going to save Zynga?s entire business, but more players by any means certainly will not hurt.
