Officially, Gov. Cuomo, NY Senate GOP Dig In Their Heels On Women's Equality Act

Updated: From an official standpoint, both sides of the Albany debate on whether to pass Gov. Cuomo's ten-point Women's Equality Act in its entirety or leave out the controversial abortion plank are ending the day by digging in their heels.

cuomo cap bw_1.jpgA few moments ago, Cuomo's office sent out a statement in support of passing the full Act -- which, as our Ken Lovett noted earlier, has now been broken into ten separate sections. Almost simultaneously, a Senate rep said GOP Leader Dean Skelos remains committed to blocking the abortion bill. How the deals ultimately get (or don't get) done remains to be seen.

Statements (and more) follow:

Cuomo: ?In 1848, the women?s suffrage movement began in America at the first Women?s Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, New York. Since then, New York has been at the forefront of important social and legal movements that have advanced the equal treatment of all people. Today, I stand proudly in solidarity with the members of the 850 women?s advocacy groups, and call on the leadership and members of both houses to introduce and pass all 10 points of the Women?s Equality Act before the end of this legislative session...

"Each and every one of these issues is vitally important to the future of women in our state, and New Yorkers deserve to know where their elected representatives stand on all of them. New York is the last place where women?s rights should be held back; it is the place where they must move forward.?

Kelly Cummings, spokeswoman, Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos: "Our position has not changed. We expect to pass nine of the 10 elements of the governor's Women's Equality Agenda, however, we continue to oppose bringing the abortion provision to the floor."

Here's the list of who's sponsoring which sections of the 10-point proposal. As you can see, the bills are split between members of the Republican conference and the IDC.
