ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast ? Amnesty International says thousands of people who became sick in Ivory Coast five years ago are still waiting for compensation.
Thousands sought medical treatment after waste from a tanker chartered by Trafigura Beheer BV was offloaded at several sites around the West African nation's commercial capital in 2006.
Amnesty International said Friday that the Ivorian government put together a list of 95,000 people to compensate but it's unclear how much payment they actually received.
Trafigura has said it does not accept legal liability for the incident as the dumping was carried out by a local contractor. Trafigura insists the waste was not toxic but had a mix of gasoline residues, water and caustic sodas used for cleaning.
