The Gort Family: Special education: resources and rants

A writer reached out to me to inform me of this post, which is a great resource for students pursuing degrees in special education. As parents of individuals who are directly affected by teachers, students and the education process, here's a list of "40 inspiring blogs that every special education teacher should read."

I guess blogs like ours might qualify as 'inspirational' because teachers really need to have an understanding of family dynamics in order to provide the best outcomes for our kids. While teachers do a great job of understanding this, it's a challenge because many states, like Michigan for example, have leadership in government who have very little understanding.

Just last year, Gwen was required to take standardized tests that required her to participate in projects related to geography, science, math, etc. whereas she was required to guess the answers by signing or using her switch (tasks that require much, much hard work).

Labeled "Unique Learning Systems, (not sure if this is the only resource for it)" I'm not sure that I agree with the principles behind it. Of course, we have limited information about this switch in education models from our school system but it's safe to say that I'm not sure it balances her needs.

From what we saw last year, the only hope is that it will prep her to be more independent in 'her world' and that's really what education is all about, isn't it?

But, on the other hand, it seems like an impossible task for students and teachers to apply teaching methods catered to standardized tests...a rule of thumb for our public education system but not necessary proven to be the best way to learn, especially for individuals with special needs.
